I tried to learn guitar but don't have the dexterity in my fingers and no patience! I wish I still had my drums! Maybe I should trade the guitar and amp on an electronic kit...at least my neighbors wouldn't be able to hear them!

I'm looking at picking up the bass again. When I gave it up the ubernetz had just started coming into prominence; now, there's so much instructional material online I'm hoping to make more progress than the last time.

Absolutely, the web makes a huge difference. Search for tabs, chords, instructional material, whatever you want to learn. Thank you, Mr Gore!
Callus-wise, I expect it to get worse before it gets better. IIRC, I will cycle through some skin along the way. Some of them will blister and peel off, allowing me to play on raw new flesh for a few days. Does anyone one have any tips (no pun intended) for keeping the skin on?

Update
Based on a little googlation, I did the following: bent on some lighter-gauge strings, and got some tincture of benzoin for my fingertips. Big improvement!
Regarding the T of B, it's pretty amazing. A couple of blisters that were beginning to form just disappeared after a couple of applications. I couldn't find it at Walgreen's or the local health-food/vitamin place. Google to the rescue again, I got some at REI.

im trying to teach myself guitar using "rocksmith" for xbox 360. you plug any real electruc guitar into your xbox and it takes you through lessons on how to play. takes the entertainment of a guitar hero type game and brings it into an actual musical skill rather than pressing colored buttons. technology is pretty great sometimes.
