High capacity magazines?
Since the "Assault Weapons Ban" sunset, high-cap. magazines are now available for XDs. Smith&Wesson had an offer late last year to exchange standard capacity magazines for high capacity ones on their handguns. I just purchased a new XD 9mm, and I e-mailed Springfield to see if they would offer the same exchange. They said yes! Now I don't know if I really want to do it. What are your opinions on the benefits of high capacity mags? Will I run into state law problems? Are they really better or should I stick with my 10+1?
Thanks, Ice |

Personally...I've never owned standard capacity mags. The neutered ones work just fine for me.

If you don't live in a state where hi-caps are or might soon be illegal, I'd go for it. However, if your gun primarily sees range time, it might not be worth the effort. When practicing, I only ever load to 10 rounds because I feel it makes for a more "balanced" session (no leftover partial clips).

I never load more than 5 rounds in the mag when at the range. For me, it makes the most out of your session. Your able to stay focused and keep a good sight picture. It's easy to keep track of the rounds you use. You don't tire out as quick and your hands don't get as sore. It's easier to track your rounds(looking for 5 instead of 10 or 12).
So I guess it's really up to your preference. I would like to have some hi-cap mags, but if I can't do it with 10, the extra 2 won't matter. |

I buy Standard (hi cap) magazines simply because I can. I have no use for them right now but if in the future I do and they are once again (shudder) banned I will have missed my opportunity. I loaded all mine to full capacity a couple of times to make sure they fed properly but after that I'm like the other guys after 5 or 6 shots I like to lower the gun, reload and reacquire my sight alignment, sight picture. Most gun games/competition limits the number of rounds in a magazine too. There is a small advantage to hi caps for self defense but if I was in a situation where I needed that many rounds I probably shouldn't have been there in the first place.
I think buying Standard (hi cap) magazines can be a political statement too. If there is not much demand for them than the politicians will see that as it not being an important issue and when the antis want to ban them again the pros won't fight it. I encourage all my family and friends to get CCW for that very reason even if they do not intend to carry. Politicians will use these statistics to make decisions with. Better safe than sorry though. Buy the Standard (hi cap) magazines. |

Another magazine capacity ban will be even tougher to enforce. Can you imagine?.....well, let me see here, you have 3 preban 1994 magazines so these are OK. and you have 2 after ban 10 rounders so these are OK. what are these? oh, after sunset of the assault weapons ban magazines, so these are OK and you have some 10 round magazine from the current banned magazines laws and these are some high cap Law Enforcement magazines that you couldn't have but can have now..........

Any new mags produced after a new ban date will have to have the date stamped on them, that's all.
