For my Rott he likes his Kong's. We get him the "cone" version. You can put things inside of it and they can entertain themselves as they try and get out what is in there. We also have a Kong ball. He did manage to tear the top of the cone off but has yet to be more destructive. There are the red Kongs by the way. I believe the black Kongs are said to be more indestructible.

Same here. I put peanut butter inside his and freeze it. Started with the red ones, but he ripped it up. The black one is holding up really well. The ball is really great too.

nylabone? My guy has a whole bunch or different shapes and sized bones, i think he had 5. He has rounded off, and wore down the faux bone shape, but not wore them out yet, in 1.5 years. Granted he is working on 5 of them. 1 bone would likely last a good chewer many many months or a year or more.

Same with kong toys they hold up well to GSD, pits, rotties and hard biters like that. I have red ones i bought not knowing black was the tougher rubbber, mine has yet to destroy the red kongs that look like a cartoon beehive.

Blue Buffalo is a great food but the expense for two big dogs was killing us. So we finally settled on Diamond Naturals Pet dog food.

Compare the ingredients (listed at their website) and you'll see that they are close to the higher priced foods. They have a store locator so you can find them closer to where you live.

Science diet uses a lot of empty fillers. Try this site. http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

You can't go wrong with the 4 or 5 star foods on there.

Yes, diamond was the company that had the recalls. The tainted food only came from their non holistic foods, but they recalled some of their holistic food too if they came from certain plants. They never found any tainted batches in their holistic foods... but I got a free bag of taste of the wild because of it.

Science Diet is crap, lots of fillers, its really a shame that they pay so many vets to endorse their food... I've had vets tell me to take my dogs off ToTW, but can't give me a reason why when I ask... of course its the money for them...

Any vet that recommends you downgrade foods should be a sign to find yourself a new vet.

where do i learn from unbiased source not just what is filler, but what a dog needs, can digest, etc.

I want him to have good food, but do not want to buy hand made stuff by some organic hippy that costs 5 times as much, if it is not a big benefit.

My vet did not sell me on it, but he did not talk them down when i asked about it, or he asked me what i fed my guy.

I got my guy in the yard of a burned down home, he had been there for 4 months with people throwing him scraps over the fence. I was unprepared for a dog when i got him, and bought science diet on a whim, since it had good numbers, i have seen the commercials, and well the pup needed food that night. I couldnt mail order it etc.

I have been unable to sort through whats really good, what is bs, what is to much or wasteful.

Any suggestions? Male rottie, going on three years old this winter.

I use Pet Food Online | Dog & Cat Supplies & Products | PetFoodDirect.com. They have a MUCH better selection of dog food, including Natures Variety. Which is THE BEST dog food, imo.
