Why would they want to get married in a church full of bigots anyway?

"The church congregation had decided no black could be married at that church, and that if he went on to marry her, then they would vote him out the church,"

They would need to vote him out? What kind of jackass would want to stay on at a church filled with idiots?

I would say they are in their rights to choose who attends their church and what services are offered to whom. so what if a black couple had never been married there before? I am sure other churches have been around just as long and never married a white couple, or asian couple.

seriously. WHO CARES? not everyone has to like everyone and if they don't like you and it hurts your feelings find people that DO like you and go there. its not that difficult.

if these guys don't like blacks, find people that do. if they don't like gays, find people that do. if they don't like gun owners, find a place full of gun owners. if the town is upset by a mosque, find a town that will openly (and freely) accept a mosque. why invest so much time and effort into getting everyone to like everyone when people get along just fine when there are clear boundaries. let people know where you stand and there are no hurt feelings. respect their feelings and you might just get some respect in return.

plopping down right the center of where feelings run deep and you may not be welcome, then using the law to press the issue, isn't a way to positively impress people and make friends. if nothing else it only furthers resentment and hard feelings.

am I too far off on this?

Well, not liking someone and discrimination are two different things. I think people have a right to dislike anyone they want but this is more than that.

If we stuck to this line of thinking, there would still be signs on bathrooms, restaurants etc. saying: "No blacks allowed" or "Whites Only".

Sounds like the people of this fine church wouldn't mind that.
