Am not a "techie" in any shape or form.. just a user.
My older laptop went for about 4-5 years with decent battery life. I would charge it fully, then let it discharge until the low battery alarm would activate, then plug in. I'd do this daily... once it ran down one time, I would then leave it plugged in for the rest of the day. For battery life, I was getting about 1 1/2 - 2 hours out of it. (Not bad for the time).
That battery went bad I thought so I bought a new battery. The new one doesn't last much over 1/2 hour, and that is only if the computer is already running. If I need to start up, doesn't last that long. The old battery is about the same. I get the feeling it is a computer problem at this point.
The only thing I do know, is that if you are planning to keep the computer plugged in all the time, it is better to not have the battery installed the entire time.

1. Buy high-quality batteries (for safety and longevity)
2. Keep them cool (good airflow)
3. Don't fully drain
I usually get 2-3 years from a good laptop battery, then they die a pretty quick death. I had a laptop that ran really hot, and batteries would only last a year.

I still recommend that once every other month you run the battery down and let it recharge. A lithium battery isn't totally immune from the memory effect and a complete discharge keeps that from being an issue. Outside of that I leave my laptop plugged in as it is a 17" model and the battery life is less than 3 hours anyway.
My $.02, which is worth what you paid for it.

update on my new batt
hp pavilion win 7 (when it came out ~'09 '10?), i bought a new lit-ion on line $11 (the old one was also a lit-ion): charged it over night, let it run on batt only and it went for 4hrs, recharged took 2 hrs to charge. TOOK the batt out and YEP, i can run my laptop w/o a batt...wow, how cool is that!(never tried it before). in the frig it will go now until i want to move it off pwr! i'll use it every now and then to keep active.
thanks Ocean and all others that have contributed to this thread.

I leave it plugged in and roughly once a month I let it drain to almost dead. I dont want those electrons to expire
