Why? What father-to-son (or daughter) moment is epitomized with the AK?
.22 rifle to introduce your son to marksmanship and rifle hunting
12 (or 20) guage (pump) shotgun to introduce your son shotgunning
.22 pistol to introduce your son to handguns
HD pistol to keep said son/family safe

Nice brief article. What age would be appropriate to get my son into .22 rifle shooting? Do ranges have any age restriction?

You clearly don't live in AZ.
I'd add not just the AK (my choice), but also the AR family to that list. Lots of kids 'round these parts were introduced to center-fire rifles with EBR's. They're accurate, easy to handle, and don't hit that hard on the recoil. Plus, it allows training in safe mag changes, and many households keep a black rifle as a HD weapon.

The longer I live here, the more I realize I seriously couldn't dream of being somewhere else. I've been in phoenix 14 years, and I love it. I'd love to live in Flag for a while too.

Not sure there is a recommendation other than what is right for your child. Mine are 8 and 10 and we started about a year ago. We do only rifle shooting right now, although we've tried the .22lr pistol. They weren't ready for it.
We practice the 4 basic firearms rules and if they break one of them, at any point, we pack up and head back home.
The 4H club here only allows shooting at 11, but cub scouts allows BB guns and bows/arrows at 6 (1st graders are Tiger cubs). I've seen 6yo kids on Youtube doing IPSC better than I ever could. My kids don't have the interest or the ability at this point for that kind of competition.
So, the answer to your questions is, it depends on you and your child.
