Cell Phone Service Providers
I've been a long-time Verizon customer, and I have had excellent, reliable service from them. I have had other carriers before, such as AT&T, Cingular, the AT&T again, but none of them were as good as the "Big V"'s. Now it seems Verizon is completely revamping most of their plans, and I'm not sure I like what I am seeing. On top of that, their new plans are even more confusing than before, and I have no use for "family share plans" to begin with. AT&T plans to do something similar to what Verizon has done. T-Mobile and Sprint simply suck when it comes to coverage and service compared to Verizon and AT&T. I'm not sure what to do because I feel like no matter what, I'm the one who is screwed. My current phone is barely working, and I need to upgrade to a smart phone for business purposes. I'm sort of a free agent right now because my two year contract expired last year. I've been holding out because of all the changes before committing to anything again. But at this point, things seem more weird, expensive, and complicated than before. No to mention I don't like being "forced" to "bundle" in order to save money (such as the share plans, etc).
What are your thoughts on all this?

Well sweetheart, let's start with where do you live?
Here in Texas DFW area we have AT&T. So far the reception and coverage has been fairly decent. We finally upgraded to smart phone about a month ago and they too are doing quite well.
All of my family is with AT&T so our calls are somewhat free I guess.
When I have used my phone in the sticks of Georgia deer hunting it worked form a deer stand miles from anywhere.

If you dont want the new plans you have two weeks from yesterday to upgrade and keep your same plan. If you upgrade after this time and want to keep a plan or unlimited data you will have to pay full retail price for the phone. You will have to switch if you want the discounted phone after the two weeks. They are saying you can even preorder the new galaxy phone even though it wont be out in time.

Either way, regardless of provider, your gonna get screwed in my opinion. Verizon has pretty good reception everywhere except way in the hills and mountains...so I figure that the best coverage and phones gets my vote so I can at least get a reach around.

I just switched to att last week. Got a HTC vivid smartphone for $10 with the new plan. Its about $75/mo for everything I need. The $10 deal is online only though.

well, you were just NOT far enough in the sticks of GA then...ATT sucks and verizon is the only one that will get you in AND OUT of the sticks of middle and south GA...don't tell me you were north of Macon or very close to an interstate 75/85/20/16?
ETA for cpt jack:
i'm a tracfone prepay guy for yrs and found that when i had thier 'ATT' as their carrier, i got crap signals. i kept biaaitching and they said we may need to change to a CDMA phone and they sent me another. Aand it was a non SIM card and i got a Verizon prefix when they changed models to this "different technology" phone they said and it changed to their 'Verizon' carrier and it works GREAT from then on. my bud ATT from ATL area's cell and iphone gets sssssss sig when we are in the sticks in middle, south GA. when we were at Taladega, AL for the race, he was jammed up, but mine had plenty of service.
i'm looking at walM's 'straight talk' for my gal to upgrade off her BS 'net10' at $50 a mo and go w/their straightalk $30 a mo with 1000 tx, 1000 minutes, 30 MB net. if that works and she stays under the 1000, we are good, but if not i'd go w/the $45 unlimited/mo with straight talk. i HATE contracts...prepay has been working for me, but i dont' talk on a cell much AT ALL, just tx.

This is true, I have better coverage in my area than any of the other providers.

It really depends on where you live and whether or not you travel a lot. Each area has a dominant carrier. If you live in an area that has great Verizon service, I would stick with them. I'm in Florida and here, AT&T (for me) is dominant. I have never lost service or had a dropped call and already have LTE at 20+Mbps. My brother in California could not keep an AT&T signal to save his life so he switched to Verizon.
No matter the changes Verizon makes, the others are probably not too far behind them making the same changes.

Im on the old unlimited data plan with verizon at 166 a month for 2 phones and a 20% discount! I just looked at a new plan and what do I get rewarded with for being a long time verizon customer? A 20 dollar increase! I am thinking hard about switching to Wally world cellular. Yea their phones arent so great and they run off T-mobile, but, this is ridiculous. Maybe find some decent used GSM phones then switch.
