This Means War

Diplomacy is NOT working….A couple of squirrels are taking advantage of my good nature and have become greedy. They are tearing up my bird feeders. For several years I have been overspreading the birdseed and peanuts so the squirrels would get their fair share and stay out of the feeders, but the squirrels have crossed the line, and I must retaliate.

What would be the best backyard-only squirrel rifle/handgun for a suburban homeowner?

I have a 100X200 lot with a 50 foot wide X 200 foot long swath of thick shrubs and tall trees – the perfect squirrel environment I know. I have a corner lot and neighbors on two sides. Any shot I take will be with the target squirrel (and chipmunks too) within 30 feet. My two neighbors’ yards are each a good 100 feet away from the killing zone.

I would guess a BB gun or pellet gun might do the job. Any suggestions?

Tom

Daisy Powerline 880-the bane of field mice. I have had mine for seven years and fired approximately 12,000 BB's and pellets through it. Never had a problem of any kind. I think they are much more user friendly than Crossman's retarded spring loaded top magazines they think should be in rifles like the 760. Very accurate, quiet, and comfortable to hold. (it isn't one of those ultra short stocked things that was intended for a child). For best results, I recommend a pointed pellet at ten pumps for the first shot, followed up by BB's from the resevoir in case you need a follow up shot or two. Happy hunting. If you didn't live so far away, I would volunteer my gun and even my services. (hee hee)

Well I would recommend a pellet gun.

Well I would not pay this much, just look at some pawn shops or something, you should be able to get one pretty cheap. I have one of the old models the one I had as a kid, they are sweet for a pellet gun. Single shot break action with rifling, mine will go threw a privacy fence and very accurate. You could go up and get a .22 pellet gun if you need more knock down power or don’t believe the .177 is a sufficient round. I like pellets over bb's since they expand, are lead and more accurate.

If you really think it will be an all out war you might need to invest in something much higher end. Like these http://www.airgundepot.com/airforce-air-rifles.html

But if you want to just have some good clean fun get a decent air soft rifle and just have some good constant target practice. You wont kill them, well they might die eventually form internal bleeding and organ damage.

Nice idea, a combination bb and pellet rifle. I will definitely look into this. Thanks.

I like that airsoft gun idea. I shot an airsoft pistol at the Tactical Defense Institute this past April. A pistol like this would be safe for backyard (under cover of course) use and fun for irritating (training) squirrels and chipmunks.

Thanks,
Tom
