Being a mom is no longer hip since feminism has convinced women that they're worthless unless they have a six figure career and brass balls the size of the Mississippi. Plus there is the new economic paradigm where not just the man has to work. Its hard to figure out which came first if any. Did the 'liberation' lead to the new economic reality or did the economic reality lead to the 'liberation'?

It seems clear though that birth control and the way we use it has helped enable or led to massive changes in our society and thinking that we can scarcely begin to comprehend. Perhaps not all of it good. Something to think about the next time some liberal goes off on a rant that the only reason people could hate contraception is because their old fuddy duddy bible says so.

I think the point of those 'attacks' was that Ann Romney has no idea what it's like to have the career/ stay at home mom decision made for you. Many more moms are forced to work, and cannot rely on nannies and housekeepers.

I dunno about the white women hotness issue....there are some amazingly beautiful Latin women in this city. Never been a fan of blondes...seems odd because I am half Swede but maybe because my family is full of blonde blue eyed women that I find other types more attractive. My wife of 18 years is a brunette.

Why whites are diminishing probably has something to do with the fact that more white women go to college and decide that they don't want kids right away of don't want as many kids as, say a non-white woman that is Catholic and does not believe in using birth control....I dunno.

I know that me and my peers within my own family know that kids are expensive and that probably figures in to why most of us only have 1-2 kids and some of my 40-something cousins have none. Some of them travel quite a bit in their jobs and don't even have a pet.

It just might be that the poorer minority women do not have the money for contraception and are more likely to risk it and skip using a condom. Again...I have no records or stats to back that up...just guessing.

Part of the reason America's white birth rate is going down is obvious: our geography. Mexico and Latin America being so close. If we had another nation of mostly Anglos to the south like our northern neighbor, our demographics might look very different.

I am still waiting to see if, as a minority, I get some free stuff!! LOL

Cultural deaths eh? I was in Italy and France about 3 years ago and last time I checked they still spoke French in Paris and Italian in Venice, even the darker ones. They were still serving their respective native food and drinks, and the flags were still the same color as before.

Here's the problem: the NYT article reports on data... numbers. Data - accurate data - are not subject to political correctness, bigotry, racism, or any other human emotion... data are data, pure and simple... just measurements. You - through your eyes and your interpretation, assign some sort of race-related/racially motivated/judgmentally motivated 'implications'... some sort of non-politically correct bugaboo, in knee-jerk reaction to be being presented with simple birth rate data. You even assign such a prejudice upon me. It seems projection is your forte'!

I see the data and see a shift in future composition of our nation; white people represent roughly 63% of the population, however now produce less than 50% of the births. If white birth rate kept pace with population growth by the other segments of the US population, white births ought to represent 63% of the total births. Though not really addressed in the NYT article, immigrants - both legal and illegal - have the highest birth rates - and fastest growing populations - in our nation, and this is not likely to change. As a matter of fact, native born US citizens birth rate - all races combined - has fallen below replacement birth rate for about the last ten years, and it is only immigration that has made up the difference. This means that twenty, thirty years (1-2 generations) from now our nation will look quite a bit different than it does today. Good or bad... I don't pretend to make the call, events will unfold beyond our control, and history will simply reveal itself.

As to indigenous cultural death in Europe, that's not an exageration, but rather a matter of time... it has been happening for more than 2 or three generations. Italy's native Italian population birth rate is probably the lowest in western Europe (Italy's birth rate i something like 1.23 children per woman; replacement birth rate - just to maintain a population, needs to be something like 2.3 children/woman); in another 30 or 40 years native Italians will be a small aging minority in their own land... who will remain to maintain the Italian cultural heritage? The immigrant population? They are the fastest growing segment in Italy. Just about all of western Europe is in the same predicament... immigration, especially from the Middle East, Africa and non-Pacific Rim Asia -- coupled with declining indigenous birth rates that cannot even sustain native population - is in the process of overwhelming the native peoples... what do you think will happen to French culture when the immigrant population dominates? Will French cultural heritage be supported? The Dutch? The Germans? Norway? Denmark?

Russia might be even worse off... the Russian population is just declining... birth rate is declining, and there are not even immigrants to make up the population losses.
