I could get his job back I 5 minutes! He needs to insist everyone who touched that gun AFTER he turned in be fired! They all possessed it.

My guess is, had he went straight to the PD and turned it in instead of waiting until the end of the day to do so, he would have been fine. In retrospect, he should have done just that. He should have waited for the cops to arrive, and when they didn't, he should have driven the dam thing to the pd and handed it in personally. Instead he continued his shift, and THAT is probably what got him fired. I don't like the zero tolerance policies much myself, but this one, could have been done differently.

And they would have fired him for leaving his job......
He is not in the wrong at all. It is a gun, it isn't like he found a nuclear weapon. He secured it, and at his next opportunity took it to police.
