Sprint's customer service and coverage is VERY iffy, AT&T does not offer unlimited data, T Mobile has spotty coverage as well. Boost, Virgin and others don't have good phone choices and their coverage is also iffy in rural areas.
Bummer.
I just hope this does not become an industry wide practice.

you might be grandfathered in and still have unlimited data...but they slow it down after you use X amount.

AT&T does not appear to offer unlimited data plans to new users:
Wi-Fi Data & Tethering Data Plan - Wireless from AT&T

Right now, if you upgrade your smartphone on Verizon, you have the choice of the iPhone, Blackberry and a handful of crappy smartphones to choose from if you want to say with 3G. To be honest, there's no reason to upgrade if you're staying with a 3G phone unless your current phone is toast. The technology hasn't advanced far enough with 3G phones to warrant it.
In regards to 3G or 4G plans, there's really no difference in the services they provide, but rather it's more of an estimate as to when you signed up for that plan.
Also, to clear something up to those wondering how your contract works out.
I think some of you are confusing your calling plan with your contract. The calling plan is merely the list of features (minutes, data, texts, etc) associated with your phone number. These can be changed at any time without any cost or having to extend your contract.
Your contract on the other hand is your commitment to stay with your carrier. As a "reward" for signing a new 2-year contract, carriers give you a break on the price of a phone. With Verizon, for instance, you have three options: 1) No Contract - you pay full price for a phone 2) you commit to 2 years and you get it for the discounted price or 3) Pre-Paid - you get a mildly discounted phone and you can choose from Daily or Monthly pre-paid plans.
But again, don't get confused between your plan and your contract. They're two entirely different things.

I actually went BACK from 4G to a 3G phone on Verizon. Apparently, they had not perfected their 4G network and the data side sometimes worked and sometimes did not. Got sick of it and ditched the Verizon 4G phone for the HTC Incredible 2 and to be honest, this "crappy smart phone" has been one of the least troublesome smart phones I have ever owned.
Has Verizon even fixed the data drop-off problems with their 4G network? At first, they were not even admitting to the problem (typical) but many on the web reported the same data outages that I was having. Lesson learned...don't race out there and buy the latest greatest until it has been out for a while and the bugs worked out.
