Well just friggin GREAT!

Lighting hit my house today, took out my LCD TV, DISH box, Modem, and now my PS3 won't come up on my old tv. I was laying on the couch when it happened and I felt a "buzz" in the air. There goes my bonus.

Uh huh, only chumps plug it the main units and leave the lighting to travel through the satellite coax and a phone line. Then go try to use the "warranty" only to be declined because they were too much of a know it all to spend a little more to protect everything that lightning can travel through.

Here's your $6 one that works "just as well" wonder where the cable and phone lines go? Oh yeah, nowhere.

Monster is overpriced compared to some other COMPARABLE equipment.

Here is a DIFFERENT brand with the same price tag. It's features not the name. get the right equipment dont just base it off of $6 vs $24.

Arrow If lightning hits your house directly, you're screwed.

Most of the time, all that's in those surge suppressors are MOVs ( Varistor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). All they do is clamp down and draw a bunch of current when the voltage rises into their working range, trying to soak up the surge. It can work for indirect strikes and other surges, but a direct hit will cause them to literally explode! Our old house got hit, and it fried a bunch of stuff. A lot of it was plugged into expensive surge suppressors. Of course the surge suppressor company denied the claim saying the surge exceeded the capacity of the device. Well DUH, it's a lightning strike, 10 BILLION joules, when an MOV might take a few thousand! I took the fried surge suppressors apart and found charred and fragmented MOVs. The one on my computer even had a hole in the housing where it arced out of it and went into the concrete floor. I saw it happen, there was a bright white spark that came out of it! Don't believe their warranty BS, but having surge suppressors can save you some $$ from smaller surges.

OP, for the PS3, pull the power cord while it's booting up a couple times. That will cause it to reset the screen resolution, and reset it so the HDMI isn't the default output anymore.

Surge protectors do nothing if ya take a direct hit

I have a friend that got hit a few years back, it lit up his entire house, he said it was dark and it looked like the brightest light he has ever seen went through his entire house

He had many surge protectors throughout his home

He is big time into radios, like ham radios and stuff, it fried several of his radios and amps

He lost every tv in the house, two computers, the fridge, the deep freezer, microwave, every ceiling fan in the house, clock radios, he had to replace some of the breakers in his breaker box also

I forget what the cost of the damage was but it was thousands

Have a monster surge protector, funny thing is only took out some of the stuff plugged into it. Got a new modem for free, black tie protection is worth the 15 dollars, I have gotten two free modems. New dish box on the way. Buy a TV tonight I guess. Ps3, it still turns on, I tried to bring up the reset scree a few times on the old TV, no luck. I am hoping that when I bring up the new TV it might work. It was def a direct hit, I could feel the buzz when it hit. My German Shepard came Unglued at the same time.
