Need help from New York State residents

My son just got out of the Marines. I bought him a M&P 9c. He is moving to New York state to be with his girl and to go to school. He will be a NYS resident. His current mailing address is in Ohio and his ID reflects this.

My question is, can he take the pistol with him to New York (it is in his name, purchased in Oh) and then apply for permit to possess? What would happen if he was to be found with said weapon in the trunk on his way there? The laws seem to say it cannot be transported in his current situation, but cannot find info on moving to the state of New York, how would that work?? Thanks for any help'

its ny good luck. he can't take it with him until he's legal you can hold it for him until that time, how you would legally transfer it to him in ny I have no idea.

I think he would have to surrender it or have it put on the permit of a nys pistol permit holder. But that means they would own it. If there is a gun store there willing to hold it under their license till he begins the long process of obtaining a permit then he could have that put on his.
I just moved from ny. Very strict laws. I think it is a felony to posses a Pistol without a permit in nys. I did 4 years of active duty in the army out of Texas and couldn't wait to get home to ny only to learn of the laws. I've recently moved to pa.
Congratulations to you and him though. But do things the right way. Im not sure what career path he is choosing but if he were to become a law enforcement officer that's one way to own it.
If im not mistaken leo can have 2 pistols on their badge without a pistol permit.

As I understand it he has to obtain a permit for a handgun before he can have it in his posession. There are probably gunshops in whatever area he is moving to who will store the gun for a fee. However, that gun will have to be shipped to that gun shop, he CANNOT transport a handgun in New York state without a handgun permit. IMO it will be a lot less costly to simply leave that M&P in Ohio until he is granted a permit.

BTW, if he's going to be living in New York City he might as well sell the gun. Because he'll have to have someone like Donald Trump backing his application for a permit, plain old Joe Shmo from Ohio won't get any consideration.

A serial number is needed for the application. First step is to take the Pistol safety course approved by his counties sheriffs office. Begin the packet. Also obtain the residence. Put reason for use something like recreation or sporting. It defense even though they know its a main reason why ppl want one.

They made a family friend start with a .22 pistol. Also, I've heard some crazy ny laws. Night sights and hallow points is basically intent.... too much just to own a pistol. Its not right. Though the metro area population is nearly that of the rest of the state....ny has alot of good hunting ad shooting areas that Noone shouldn't be able to enjoy.

I my mind, he volunteered to give up his rights (again). He should live with his decision. At least this time he has the option to just un-volunteer and take his GI-Bill Money to a State and City more deserving of it.

I moved from there a year ago. It really depends on where he is going to live in NY. If he is in Albany, Buffalo or NYC good luck. Outside of those areas he'll have a good chance of getting the permit to have the gun in his home but no CCW. The CCW depending on the county he lives in is the hardest part to get because certain counties require a valid purpose such as working for a executive protection company, you handle jewelry or work for an armored car company. He has be a resident for at least 6 months, supply at least 3 references that live in the same county and are not LEO's, Take the NRA Basic Pistol Course. Next you wait for a court date which will probably take at least 6 to 9 months to get.
