Field Expedient Bulletproofing
This has been on my mind for a while and I've had difficulty finding any resources on it.
What would you do to bulletproof your car if SHTF and you needed a bulletproof vehicle (maybe you are going after some much needed supplies in a known hotspot)?
I have come across a few ideas:
-phonebooks, wrapped with duct tape to make them tight, and either put in the doors or hung outside them
-ceramic tiles or plates hung (following the SAPI plate idea)
-layer of cookie sheet - ceramic tiles - phone books - ceramic tiles
Any ideas???

Ceramic floor tile...could RTV/epoxy or even duct tape the back...problem is..hard tile like that will completely shatter when bullets hit it..
Plus it would be heaaaaavy
A car is concealment..not cover...bullets seem to zing right thru that sheet steel...on BOTH sides..and the windshield...barely slows bullets down
Armor plating is not ceramic though..its MUCH harder stuff
one hit on the plate..armor gone...anything bigger than small arms..and it wont matter

as they say, there isn't much that is bullet proof... it's actually more bullet "resistant."
Anyway, that being said, someone (mythbusters maybe?) had a show on a similar subject.
The phone books in doors helped a little. they took some cast iron cooking pans and tested those too.... and I forget the other stuff. As AwPhuch mentioned Some of the ceramic tile sheets that they have can help. (sometimes)....
But, an auto, except behind the engine block and sometimes the axle/wheel assemblies is primarily concealment. A lot of ammo of different calibers will go right through. I'll see if I can find the link.

here's the link, but I can't watch it on this connection to see if I remembered right.

Pardon me for the faux pas; I should have titled the thread field expedient bullet resistant-ing
I agree tiles would be extremely heavy, and that a car is mainly concealment. But if there is a way to improve survivability so I can get out of a hairy situation (should I find myself in one), I'd like to know about it.

Nothing says "SHOOT ME!" like duck tape wrapped phone books all around a car!
I'd say, just drive rapidly and radically.

Portland Cement in all the door and body cavities and in the tires......Would stop anything short of an Mk 211 round i imagine. But impractical as hell.

I like that idea, but definitely impractical.
I agree that a bunch of phone books duct taped to the side of your car is like painting a big target on your car.
What if the bullet resistant material were to be put inside the vehicle instead? It would be much more important to protect the passenger compartment than other parts...right?

rip the inner door panel off put in phone books, at least you then have a shield to get behind so you have cover with you.
ceramic tiles won't do you anywhere near the amount of good vs weight.
if truly mad max I might phone book the rear of my seat too.
but if bullets really start flying more than just one or two at minimum you'll be bleeding, you will probably end up shot regardless.
One of my friends as DPD cop ended up in a firefight in a house, and went up a staircase vs wall of bullets to get between bad guy and kid. Had to get up there to prevent the kid becoming a hostage, he sai d there wasn't a section of his body not bleeding, my point is, even if they don't have machine guns/ieds/rpgs and other crazy stuff just bullets flying in through the window ports your goign to get messed up.
I'd do the door so you have cover to shoot behind when rolling up on someone. Maybe the outside by where your legs are so you have something to curl up behind when your life flashes before your eyes.

I think that might be the best we could do, except for if you drove a dump truck...
