Hi,
That's pretty bad on the range owners part to have such crappy setup. Its a real easy fix my hanging a ballistic curtain directly in front of the back stop. Bullets pass through hit the back stop and fragments are trapped behind the curtain. It does have to be replaced from time to time as it is a range consumable.

Same thing happened to me, my friend was shooting a 1911 at a local indoor range. Right after he pulled the trigger I got hit in the leg with a .45 round, left a red mark for a couple days. I kept the bullet as a souvenir. I prefer outdoor ranges anyways lol.

Anytime steel is used as a backstop or target theres a chance for bullet fragments to find there way back to you. Wear eye pro and proper clothing and you'll be fine.
I do prefer outdoor ranges though for the reduced risk of such problems mentioned.

I'd figure a backdrop would be angled to prevent that type of thing.
are these bouncers maybe hitting the target trolley up close? is it just real short ranges that have this problem?

I have been shooting fmj at my local indoor range for years now. I have never heard or seen anyone get hit with a ricochet. Sound's like you need a change of backdrop or a change in range. A proper range should not produce ricochets.

on the subject, I shoot indoors once a month, get peppered with breach projectiles frequently, but never muzzle projectiles
The ranges I shoot at allow JHP for small quantities to test SD ammo, but mostly FMJ in brass.

Errrrrr, "breech".
Just sayin'

That is nuts i am glad you did not get hurt. I hope they act on fixing the backstop issue, i would shoot elsewhere until i knew the work was done, could have been catastrophic.

The next question should have been "when are you going to fix it so there are no ricochets?" His answer would tell you all you need to know about ever going back there again.

Those rules are perfectly reasonable. If it's their rental gun, they'll want to have control of what is shot from it. Someone could bring in some double charged .40 or .45 and blow up their rental gun. With their own reloads, the liability is all on them.
Steel core will chew up a backstop real quick.

Changing ammo is not the answer, they need to use some of the money they`re making and make the place safe for everyone
I would not return until changes were made and I would also urge other shooters there to do the same

This.

I would hope it didn't leave a whelp, as I'd be asking how a puppy got on the range!

Multiple replies multiple posts:
Yes, it was Don's Weaponry in Little Rock.
To the guy that has been hit 5 or 6 times in 3 years: it sounds like that's not good either. Besides that point, I have been there 3 times in a month and me or someone I was with was hit each time. Projecting 10 visits per year at that rate (low projection) puts me at getting hit around 30 times.
(Range picture somewhere in this reply)
I'm typing this from my phone so I tried to remember all the replies. Probably didn't succeed and I'm not sure if the picture is going to post properly.

Poles between the lanes?!
There's your answer. Idiots think it's cool to shoot at a steel pole (see all the round impacts) and they ricochet back to the line. That's just a dumb design IMO, there should be no obstructions in the lane that could cause a ricochet like that. Some sharply angled plate around the poles would go a long way to prevent this.
