You wouldn't think a fast moving baseball to the neck would do more than maybe crush or badly bruise his windpipe and affect his breathing, or temporarily (for a moment or two) stop blood flow through the carotid to his brain... yeah, I wonder what caused death. Maybe a shock reaction? Such a shame... kids out having a great time playing ball and then something unpredictable like this changes lives in an instant. The parents must be inconsolable.

I know a family whose 11-year-old daughter died because she hung up-side-down on a jungle gym, and a blood vessel popped in her brain. This might have caused something similar.

Life is a crap-shoot. Sometimes you lose.

Ive been beaned in the head when I was playing baseball in high school. Even though I had a helmet with foam padding on the inside, when I got beaned it took me about 5min to get up. I have to say that was the worst pain I ever felt in my life.

I took a full swing bat to the head with no gear on. I was running to catch a pop-up, and the batter on-deck had his head in his rear. I had a lump and a black eye, but no worse for the wear. About 6 months later a family acquaintance took a football to the temple. He dropped to the ground, and has the motor skills and mental capacity of a 6 month old.

Which is why anyone landing punches on you (not to speak of weapons like a rock) SHOULD be considered a threat.

You may be onto something... I hadn't thought about the possibility of an aneurysm triggered from the baseball hit... I had a young cousin in her early 30s... slender, athletic, attractive, never sick, and with everything to live for... a young daughter... she and her husband & child were packing the car to go on vacation, she went back into the house for something, Mike waited and waited... she didn't come back out, he went in and found her on the living room floor, she was already gone... aneurysm. No warning signs at all, not even a headache.

This is a really sad story. I grieve for the parents and family of this young man. I cannot imagine the pain of losing a child.

I also wonder how long it will be before the bleeding hearts will start demanding foam rubber be put around all the balls to prevent something like this from happening again.

That happened to a friend of mine when we were kids, maybe 13-14 years old, full swing to the head with a wooden bat. It dropped him to his knees, but he got up and walked it off. A couple years later another friend took a line drive baseball to the head, he was dead when he hit the ground.
