Odd thing happened today
This afternoon I got a phone call from the dealership where I take my truck. They were giving me a reminder about an appointment for tomorrow 8:30AM, for an oil change.
Thing is, I never made any appointment. In fact, I've never made an appointment there for just an oil change. I asked the tech is there system has been changed to make scheduled appointments, but no, no such capability.
So, who made the appointment? Why at a time much earlier than I would have made one, if I were to do such a thing?
Odd, just odd.

Probably a fluke with the software or record keeping. Could be some bug in the system. Did you mention that you made no such appointment? They could also be trying to draw in business.

My truck is so old, I don't think it has the smarts to do that. No nav, no cell, no two way comms of any sort.
But there is an extension phone in the garage.....

My guess is that someone, with a very close phone number to you made an appointment for an oil change. The clerk typed the phone number in wrong. Since most customer tracking software like that tracks customers using phone number as the unique ID key the system ID you as the individual and placed you in for an appointment.
I'm willing to guess someone with a phone number only a digit or so off from you showed up for an oil change they never got.

That's a good possibility. But you'd think that the tech making the appointment entry would confirm name with the customer. Trust me, no one has a name very close to mine.

It's been a long, long time since that would be a viable explanation.

Most likely somebody with a similar phone number and the same first name called to make an appointment. I saw this occasionally at my old work. Someone would call in to make an appointment the service writer would be in a hurry and they would jot down the appointment on a note pad. Then when they went to put the oil change in the system they would get the wrong person. The system automatically calls people to confirm appointments otherwise about 20% of people never show.

There was a dealership in Columbus a few years ago who would call people "to confirm appointment" if it had been more than 4 months since their last oil change. They were hoping people would decide to go ahead and schedule an oil for real if they were reminded.
One of the local stations blew the whistle on them after the dealership scaled back their ad purchases...
