I live south of st louis (in a safe subdivision) but i work all over st louis for the union electric company. I was working a few streets over from this shooting today actually on dr martin luthar king dr. Yeah its a place that makes a white boy nervous to say the least. Sometimes i have to knock on doors to have cars moved or ask them to tie up their pit bulls so i can go in their back yards. uhhh we flip a coin to see whos gonna knock or walk up to the five of them on the porch drinking at 9am. One time I had a guy answer the door with a pistol in the waist band of his sweats and i couldnt help but stare. he said "you fixin to shut my power off boy!?" I said "nope wrong house...my bad playa..i didnt really call him playa though. that wouldnt of went well. Its amazing to see the lifestyle they live. My boss carries a sig 380 in his pocket all day. Luckily I may be in a multi million dollar subdivision later that day so my job keeps it interesting.

Well said! I used to live in southern IL back in the mid to late 80's and would drive up to St. Louis occasionally. It was well known that East St. Louis was a war zone, with all kinds of vice going on. Cars left on the side of the road would be stripped in hours and burned. For awhile there were people shooting out onto I-70/64 that goes in and out of St. Louis.

I once overheard a grad student from Lebanon describing his misadventure of straying into East St. Louis. He said he felt much safer in his hometown of Beirut!

Only thing mildly unusual about the story is that it's in winter in the middle of the week.

I've been to East St. Louis, gambling at the Casino Queen.
If it got too late, we would just stay the night instead of driving over to the county in St. Louis.

I was up one night $800 playing Blackjack there.
When it got down to $600, we got a room and crashed.

There was no way I was driving back to Webster Groves, half drunk at 3 AM.

I used to WORK in E St Louis at the Pfizer plant making paint pigments and other mineral based products. You really have no idea ... and I would NOT suggest you try to gain 1st person experience either!

I drove through east ST Louis on vacation and looking for the highway. Middle of the day and low on gas. Started looking for a gas station. They all had bars on the pay window which was on the outside of the station with loiters standing around. I decided to take a chance on running out of gas in a better neighborhood. I never stopped, and made it to a safe gas station, thank god.

I walked into a club in East St. Louis and right through an unseen metal detector setting it off. The bouncer glanced over at me... then waved me in.

What are your thoughts that it was the industrial companies that ruined East St. Louis? Seems like it was Monsanto Chemical, Pfizer Chemical, Aluminum Ore, Big River Zinc and other industrial plants that destroyed the natural environment, created lead poison and other problems with their waste?

That's funny! Crazy, but humorous.

When those plants were built in the 1940's (give or take a decade), E StL was a middle class WHITE area. Picket fences, stay at home mom's and 1.8 kids playing in the yard. Starting in the early 1960's, the demographic changed. The government environment changed to make business's less likely to locate there, or to expand the plants that were already there and many were expanding -- elsewhere. Jobs left, the people who could leave did. The demographic changed at an exponentially greater rate until the 1980's had it a nearly all black area. (97.7% black today) Gangs, drugs, poverty have made it the hell hole it is today because of the lack of real jobs. The real question is "why did the demographic change?". The people there blamed the government for sustained handouts that kept generations unemployed.

The "lead poisoning" you quoted is given at 1000 fps, not picked up from the soil or air. I've read the EPA report on the old Pfizer plant. Not a hazard. It looks like heck because they basically made pigments from rust, but the stuff was and is not some deadly toxin.
