A Fila Brasileiro

I don't know what size of a dog you are looking for, but a friend of mine has one of these dogs and it is very protective. Nothing I'd want to mess with. Heres a link. I also agree with the Akita the same friend that has the Fila also has 3 Akitas.

drsaari, nice lookin' little chocolate there!
I have a full bred female, about 6 years old now, and she is a hell of a watch dog...fiercely protective of stuff that is considered "her turf!"
However, once she is introduced to someone, she always remembers them and is very cool with them! (We had hardwood floors put in a year or so ago and a couple guys on the crew were a bit "iffy", if you know what I mean. Turns out that when the crew came back a couple weeks later to finish out some trim work, she was cool with the guys that were OK, but the iffy guys, she still looked at them with a cocked eye!

i say go with a Boxer. They are great with little kids and very protective of their owners .They look awesome and very powerfull but for some reason they love kids and never seen one hurt a little one at all.

The only problem with a pit (As well as a dobie or rottie and sometimes a GSD) is that if you sign up for new homeowner's insurance while you have that dog they will often ask on the application if you own a pit and if you do they may use that fact to reject you or it might kick up the price of your premiums.
