Don't feel bad for the Roadrunner

Kinda graphic if your little kid is looking over your shoulder. It's a National Geographic moment, if you will.

We have a bird feeder. It feeds lots of birds.

About once a week we started finding carcasses. When I say a carcass I mean usually it looks like this

I used to have a cat and lived "in the woods" before moving to NYC and then here. Usually stuff is dimembered pretty good. One cat, Bubba, used to leave the heads of it's prey near the door until it was sure we saw it. Bubba was 20lbs, double pawed all the way around, with the meow of a 6 week old kitten. But, I digress.

This had me curious.

One day we saw a roadrunner. MrsE got all excited and wanted to feed it. So we looked it up. I looked at her and said, We already are feeding it. They're omnivores apparently preferring small rodents & birds. Never knew it before.

It actually snatched a bird that got too cocky right in front of the mrs & her mom. I wondered what the shreiking was...Wasn't the bird.

Anyway, it's a fast bugger and today I finally got a couple of good pictures of it and thought I'd share.

Those are cool pics. I used to teach 3rd grade and we read a story about them... amazing what they'll eat! My wife teaches 3rd grade now so I'll copy those pics if you don't mind.

^Funny!

There's a baby on too. It's not much bigger than the pigeons...I mean mourning doves. It tries but the birds just reshuffle.
Took these a couple weeks ago

Its bad the pictures can't project sound because those little birds actually make that "meep-meep" sound.

Wait till you see a RR eat a snake...

Roadrunner - Land Bird - The Roadrunner - Birds

Quote:
Due to its incredible speed it is one of the very few animals that eat the rattlesnake rather than being eaten by the rattlesnake.

It will snag the rattlesnake by the tail and crack it across stones or the ground repeatedly until it is dead.

It will then display a very strange behavior. It is not able to eat the whole snake at one time, so, it will begin to swallow the prey whole, which is how they eat, and when it can’t continue to swallow, will walk around the desert scrub with the snake swinging from its mouth, and eat another few inches as part of the swallowed parts digest.
My HS mascot was the roadrunner. We called it by one of it's other names the Chaparral.

Wow I didn't know that a roadrunner will get a rattler and smash it on the rocks! That's awesome.

Beautiful birds...aren't they?

We don't have them in Houston, but my parents have lots out in La Grange and in farther West Texas, they are fairly common. I had two run in front of me this past weekend, while riding my motorcycle out there. They pretty much stay out in the open cattle fields...never seen them close to the house, barns or the woods.

We see them eat grasshoppers, lizards and small snakes quite often. Never seen one come to one of our bird feeders, though. The cardinals and blue jays pretty much own the feeders! LOL

I love the roadrunners...they are beautiful and very interesting birds.
