Maybe the kid should have used these rocks. He might have been able to take out the passenger first and avoid the X-bow bolt.
I guess justice has been served.

In our state, the crossbow shooter and the driver would both be arrested. A crossbow is a dangerous weapon and it's a felony to have access to one in a vehicle. I also have strong doubts that shooting a person for throwing a rock is grounds for a potentially lethal retaliation. Notice I said "retaliation" and not self defense. Either the rock thrower was seen before the rock was tossed and they could have stopped and gone around or if after tossing the threat was past and continuing to drive was a far better choice.
