Academic rant: chinese student is about to F my career
I'm a law student at Texas Tech, and I'm also in the college of Human Science at TTU working on a master's in Personal Financial Planning (Tech is supposed to have the best program for this in the US LINK to NYTimes article about TTU's program).
Anyhow, in one of my classes there is some female Chinese student. She sounds somewhat competent when she speaks in class, and her English sounds pretty decent for her being from China. So in this class we have a paper and presentation due (paper due Tuesday, presentation Wednesday). I'm paired with her. I've been working on it for about a week and a half, but she just sent me her "contribution" last night at 1159pm (while I was at the Roger Creager concert! HELL YEAH!)
Anyway, her "contribution" is basically just more work for me. She cites wikipedia (and spells it wikepedia), quotes articles without properly referencing the article (plagiarism that will get me kicked out the the grad school and law school), and just generally sucks at grammar/English.
This chick is in TTU's Nutrional Science program, and is working on what is basically a minor in PFP. I figure she should know better than to plagiarize or cite wiki, BUT FRICK! - she doesnt know better.
I'm putting more effort into fixing her bullchit mistakes/plagiarism than I would if I wrote the whole friggin thing myself. I want to make a lot of stereotypical comments to her about how the Chinese always steal others' work and pass it off as their own (stereotypes, I know...), but I won't (yet). FRICK
/end rant

Gotta love working in pairs. I always liked working alone on those type of things. The worst I ever had was an assignment with four partners. Just finding a time everyone could meet was a disaster. I sure miss college, just not the actual going to class part...

I guess they are trying to make this a learning experience about working with others, like in the real world. And like in the real world, the results usually turn out to be $&i+!

We're just emailing back and forth, so it isn't even a matter of trying to schedule crap...it's just her not doing her part, and what part she does do is crappy. Scary: my gf works on papers with people from all over the US via email. I'd hate to do that. I think she is working on one with about 6 authors currently.

Send her unaltered 'contribution' to your professor and tell him that you have had to spend double the time to correct her errors and find the references to avoid her crime of plagiarism. Tell him that you are just informing him of the situation and that because of her unwillingness to correctly cite references you would appreciate not being paired with her.

This... Professors are reasonable people for the most part. Just show him/her what you were sent as a contribution and go from there.

If his Instructor is worth a darn, they already know.
I see it all the time, and it's often times a known thing, before the assignment is presented to the class
Crazy is probably internally driven and his partner is externally driven.

I know your pain. I was part of a 3 person team on my Oceanography research project. I spent more time fixing their contributions and putting our presentation together than I did collecting data and doing my part. I hate relying on people like that.

I sent her 1 page of crap back to her with allllll sorts of comments and corrections and rewording and requests - she said she'll fix it. We'll see. If her work is not acceptable, I'll approach the prof and let him know of my predicament, and further let him know that I put in lots of work in correcting her shortcomings.
The paper is "only" worth 10% of my grade (all my test grades have been As), so I'm not worried, and this prof is young and seems like he doesnt accept crap from people. I hope it will work out.
