For the Armed Services...probably a stupid question but.....
My GF's brother...by the time he get's home will be my brother in law....is going to Iraq on June 2nd.....his baby is being (C-section) born 7 days prior!!!
He will be in charge of 20 men. His weapon will be an MP9, I believe. I think that is the Beretta variant for them...right? Anyways my question is...can he take his own weapon with him? I'm guessing the answer is no, but if for any reason it would be YES I want to give him my (practically new and Armory Koted) XD-9 Service to take. Is there ANY way that he would be allowed to take this gun if I gave it to him? Not to knock Beretta as it is a FINE company, but I trust the XD in the adverse conditions he will be in. He shot it today and LOVED it and I think it would be a nice going away/getting home safe present for him..that and a bottle of CLP and Gunbutter! My GF...his sis and family are worried SICK...he will be away for 1 year and I want to send him off with a pistol I would trust my life to in 100+ degree weather and sand/dirt/****! I would be proud to send him with it...can I do it? Help me out... Thank you very much! DJ Dan P.S. I want to break his legs so he can just stay home in a wheelchair and hold his newborn baby for as long as he wants!!! I joke because I already miss him and he hasnt even gone yet and his sis...my GF will not be ok until he comes home. These are scary times.

My step-son is over there now. From what he told me before he left, no personal weapons are allowed in theater.
Tell your future BIL, thank you for his service to our country, and to "stay low, and look unimportant."

I was unable to locate any specific policy specifying whether or not it is allowed. I did find several stories of how soldiers did take their firearms with them. Some people state that it is perfectly fine if your CO approves it, so it may be a unit by unit policy.
One word I will mention is that the CLP would do him no good...all it will do is attract dirt. He will need a dry lube while in Iraq because of the different environs. Likely the same thing with the Gunbutter.

Personal weapons are a no go. That's why the military issues weapons! He could be brought up on charges for bringing a weapon into the country.

What a nice guy. I don't know the answer to your question, but since you've already thought about it, I think you should give it to him either way. Even if he can't take it with him, it will show your respect, admiration and appreciation for what he's doing. Plus it's staying in the family and it will still be here for him when he returns.

Tell him to scrounge something up in theater if he needs more firepower. A lot of guys regularly carry captured AKs in addition to their issue weapons, especially those guys whose issue weapon is a pistol. No one is hand-receipted for these weapons or their ammo (he will understnad what I am talking about with the hand-receipts) so you can abuse the hell out of them or not clean them. You also do not have to beg for more ammo than the combat load, as you do with issue weapons, since the ammo seems to not belong to anyone either. Tell him just not to try and take the AK out of the country or he will go to jail. Leave it for the next group of guys who rotate in.

good magazines for his issued weapon will be more valuable than another weapon. If you want to give him something, Give him some good magazines or spring kits for his existing mags, and some graphite dry lube or something. The springs and followers are what my friends who come back from the sandbox complain about the most.

agreed.. i spent several months over there and the militray rarely maintains their mags the way they were supposed to. a replacment barrel for the beretta 92 fs might be a nice idea.

Thank you for the comments so far guys.
I honestly figured it would be a "no go". I will still give it to him as it is basically brand spanking new and he really likes it. Don't get me wrong...I'm not loaded or anything...it's one of 4 firearms I own, but I want him to have it. I know that they are supplied weapons but it would be nice if they had some sort of "approved list" or whatever. The idea on the mag parts is a good on and I will probably do that.

The military, in its "infinite" wisdom has decreed that if they didn't come up with the idea/weapon/body armor/etc. you can't use it. However, you can usually modify it with no problem. Since he's carrying the M-9...
Get your brother-in-law 1. Lots of brand new, high quality mags. 2. Some better sights. Tritium would be nice. 3. A really nice holster and mag pouches would be a good idea. 4. Replacement springs for the mags and the guide rod. 5. Some really good dry lube and a cleaning kit. Compressed air cans will help get the small grit out of the tight spots. By the way, what branch, MOS and rank is he?
