I thought i'd offer this up to the forum based on another thread concerning the db of the 40s&w round. i really don't know but i'd like to see some input on the normally used rounds as far as volume is concerned. here are the rounds:

If memory serves, there is only about a 10 dB dynamic range in SPL's (sound pressure levels) for centerfire pistols of any caliber. And the SPL's begin at a level that will quickly and irreperably damage hearing.
All that to say that rating cartridges from loudest softest might be a fun exercise, but hearing protection is still mandatory (that is, unless you don't mind asking everyone to repeat themselves). Brad

I think my .45 is louder, but my SC9 seems to hurt more when I shoot sans hearing protection. It really "cracks" more than the .45 and just seems to hurt my head more. Not very scientific, eh? LOL

For service guns, .40SW always seems the loudest to me. I notice almost no difference in .45 and 9mm, but then again I have ear muffs on.
