I'm pretty sure that my 38 snubby is louder than my 40 XD service, so I picked the 38. Both guns are probably typical of the barrel length that would be used for each cartridge. I shot the 38 at an armadillo the other day w/o ears on, and my right ear hurt for a while. I never had that kind of pain with a 9mm, for sure. And, the 40 is just a little less loud. Wear hearing protection!

Not on the list but 50AE for an autoloader (Desert Eagle). Another shooter at the range today almost made me deaf.

i have a friend with one and got the opportunity to shoot it with hearing protection. The concussion coming off that thing was unbelievable and his was "just" a 44mag.

It all depends on if you're talking factory or reloaded. No doubt you can get a crack out of 9mm major that would make your ears want to pop...same goes for 40 at about 185PF!

He's right. I heard a guy shooting a .45 GAP at a steel match a month or so ago, and this stage had a small lean-to building over it. I thought to myself, "Wow. Impressive noise and concussion there." Then a guy comes up with an open 1911 9mm w/ major loads, and good God I've NEVER felt a concussion like that that wasn't a Mosin carbine.

I'd have to say this monster will be the loudest and hardest hitter. Over 2000 lbs of muzzle energy out of a 4" barrel, definitely not the gun to limpwrist.

Edit:haha I see btad beat me to the punch
