Now I know I'm not using a 9mm
As subject says I'm definitely not using a 9mm for a defensive caliber. Talking to a local cop I know he told about responding to a domestic violence call. Got there the guy was holding a girl with a knife to her throat. The guy's hand twitched or something the knife started to cut into her throat so his partner fired and hit the guy in his eye and he's still alive. Also heard about some bg was shot two in the chest and one in the head with a 9mm and he lived to.

Too "knee-jerk" a response to what you heard.
Did you hear what the load was (gr, jacket type, etc)? That could make a difference too. Me, I'm sticking with my 9 loaded with Hydra-Shocks

I was watching TLC and there was a cop who was shot point blank range with a .380 or a 9mm and the bullet jammed in his gum underneath his chin where he was shot. I just think its all luck whether you live or not. there was another one with a football player who was shot in the head and had a piece of his brain removed. he couldnt even talk or think after he woke up but three months later they showed him running and catching the ball. All Luck IMHO

Keep talking to cops. You'll also hear stories about people being killed with 38s, 22s, heck, probably even pellets, BBs or slingshot bearings. You'll also hear incredible survival stories where someone lives through something that would normally kill 99 out of 100 people. Point is, there are 2 sides of the fence on 9mm effectiveness there is no 1 shot miracle caliber that will kill 100% of the time (at least not that you can carry concealed). I think you should do your own research and draw your own conclusions on the caliber before giving it up as useless for self protection based on the words of one persons experience...

Personally, I won't be giving up my 9mm's. Everyone speaks of shot placement as being key. Yes, there are those rare instances where a shot to the head or COM doesn't kill someone. But there are way many more instances where those types of shots DID kill someone. It's the rare cases that you hear about. The standard "was killed by..." instances don't get much publicity. Look at it this way: if it's not that person's time to go, it won't matter how or where he/she was shot (or caliber).
Besides, the point of carrying a concealed deadly weapon is to stop someone attacking you, to stop the threat to your life. You're not out to "kill" someone. If it was a legally justified shooting, whether they live or die, you don't have to worry about future issues (lawsuits). Again, there's no such thing as a one-shot stop caliber (well, not in a handgun anyway). Placement is key. Plus the fact that most people (not just BG's) would probably stop or drop after being shot with anything. Being shot has to play a real mind game with someone. Unless some drugs are involved of course. Anyway, I'll be carrying my XD-9sc for protection once I get my permit. I don't doubt its effectiveness for personal protection. I'd trust my life with my 9mm. The key isn't the gun, but the person using the gun.

lot's of soldiers got hit by 8mm rifle rounds in ww2 and are still around today. My uncle was hit 3 places by bullets from a japanese machine gun as he was diving for a trench and he is still here to talk about it. One of the shots was a head shot and took out his eye. About a month ago in the news, a ccw holder came to the aid of a police officer who was struggling w/ a suspect. The cop had already discharged his weapon into the suspect prompting the ccw holder to retrieve his own 45 from his car. Bad guy already had on 38 on board and was hit center mass 4 more times w/ the ccw holder's 45 and continued to fight prompting the ccw holder to get close and place a head shot ending the struggle. And, about 2 weeks ago, there was a post on this forum about a kid who was killed playing w/ a 22.
Pick your caliber by what you can rap off follow up shots w/ consistently and accurately and trust to shot placement.

Well, I've read several articles from reputable sources, that state how the US military can't use hollow points...ditto for LEO organizations.
They're stuck with 115gr FMJ rounds from all I've read. Drop some 124gr. hollow points (or something fancier like Hydra-shok, Corban, etc) and you're gonna put someone down a lot better. No, its not a .45, but its not a through and through the diameter of a #2 pencil anymore either. |

.22LR kills, 9mm kills, .45ACP kills. What makes you think a .45ACP would of killed that guy who got shot in the eye over a 9mm? Do you realize the difference in diameter are quite small? |

I feel completely confident with my selection of an XD-9 loaded subbie loaded with 147gr Win. Ranger ammo. Anecdotes be damned.
