Potential Threat Today and Wasn't Carrying. Peeved!
I do some work as a professional photographer. Today I was out of town on assignmnent in a tourist area shooting for a client. I had to fly to get here so I was not carrying like I normally do. I had all of my photo equipment with me which I realize is a little enticing for the average crook/mugger. I passed 4 young thugs and they really eyed up the camera in my hand as I passed them. I walked down the street and checked my 6 and sure enough as my intuition suspected, they had turned around and were following me. Just to be sure I took a couple of turns and they were definitely in trail. I then got pissed that I didn't have my firearm only because I could not fly with it. Yes I know I could have checked it but being a pilot for the last 20 years I know how things get stolen in checked luggage and have no desire to go there. I was fortunate enough to be able to walk fast, use some tactics, and lose the little scumbags. I stopped and sat down to rest and thought, That really sucks that laws prevent good citizens from protecting themselves. I'm sure those guys would have jumped me given the chance and I wouldn't have had a chance with 4 on 1 and me carrying lots of equipment. Today I felt naked.

GOOD JOB knowing the tactics to lose the buggars. Mind filling us in on how it went down? Glad you shook 'em and weren't faced with the absolute and unfulfilled need for a gun. Perhaps reconsider checking your piece with your luggage from now on, risks notwithstanding. Get a discrete piece of luggage for it or something.

Could always smack them with your camera. I know nobody would want to get hit with my lens, it's about 14 inches long and weighs about 4 lbs. Maybe a good idea to start carrying some sort of pepper spray? In a situation like that where you were aware, something like pepper spray could come in handy because you are expecting something to go down.

Yep...pepper spray is a nice thing in that situation. At least in WA, you can't just whip out your gun because some kids are following you. They have to show intent and ability to do deadly harm (like if they were carrying bats or knives) in order to draw. With pepper spray, you can douse them at the first sign they ignore "back off" commands. Once the first guy gets it, his buddies probably wont want any themselves....and you can be running while they figure out what happened.

the stuff I have, has two types of tear gas, and then pepper spray in it.. plus the UV dye. I figured it'd work better than just plain pepper spray.

I've seen fights where guys are hit with pepper spray and shrug it off and kept at it.
![]() One of these would be nice, although very bulky, cost a lot to refill, and would carry the same issues you had with taking your peice with you to begin with.
