Have her squeeze the trigger very slowly so she doesn't know exactly when it will fire. Slow everything down until she becomes more comfortable.

This has been asked before and this was my recommendation last time:
Have a friend stand next to you with a shovel, every time you flinch or blink before you shoot, he smacks you in the head with a shovel. According to research, this would be the most effective method for behavior modification. Good Luck and buy lots of ice. - T |

just duct-tape her eyelids open.
Actually, I flinch a little. It's anticipation of the shot. +1 Dry-fire practice helps +1 slow down. You should be surprised when the gun goes off, not anticipating it.

I'd suggest starting off smaller with the 22 etc. hell even a BB gun if you have one.
Snap caps are also a big help so you can dryfire and play around at home to get used to it.

I'm also not sure how using a gun that really couldn't be much more different from the XD is good practice for learning how to shoot an XD.

I had an anticipation problem where I would push foward before each shot (which is similar to your wifes problem, shes anticipating it and closing her eyes). One of the instructors stood off to the side of me and told me to get my finger of the trigger. Then he told me to aim the gun and he pulled the trigger of the gun. It surprised me, a lot. We did a couple magazines and he pulled the trigger randomly, so that I wouldnt be able to anticipate the shot.
It really helped me to calm down and learn to be surprised by the gun, which incidentely helps with a lot of trigger control issues. |

So you would look down the sight and he would pull the trigger when you woudn't expect it while your finger was to the side. If I am reading this right it sound like another option for us both. THANKS! The more ideas I have one is bound to work!

Ive started sneaking snap caps into my mags at the range and taking in and out a deep breath before each shot. It helps a lot. Of course, that will eventually have to stop cause I cant take a deep breath before I might have to actually use the gun in real life (heres hoping I wont have to).
