Nail gun vs. .22 rimfire??
I just saw this video. Pretty neat. A couple guys shoot gelatin with a nail gun and a .22 from point blank range.

I doubt that the muzzle velocity of the nail gun comes anywhere close to 1100fps. There must be some place to check it.

I wonder what's necessary to shoot the nailgun, like so. Disabling the safety?

That was a pretty cool video... and now I am much more comfortable with the idea of bieng shot with a nailgun.. a .22 though... that would hurt!!!

I did a little bit of searching and couldn't really find too much as to how much "power" in terms of what we're used to hearing in the world of firearms that a nail gun has. What I did find is that some people say they can be up to 1400fps. I know a few things about nail guns of all sorts and sizes. One thing is, they make nail guns (actually called "power hammers") that use .22 caliber crimped shells to drive nails in to concrete, stone, and steel. I have 0 doubt in my mind that those can achieve the 1400fps mark. Most of our pneumatic nail guns runs at around 120psi. Any math wizzes out there able to convert that to fps? ft.lbs.? I found also that a few models shoot nails at 1,000 inch lbs. I'm no physisist, so I'm not 100% sure, but I'm thinking divide that by 12, and you've got ft.lbs of energy.... just a thought. Also, I found a few websites claiming the "upto 1400fps" claims:
http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/content/full/166/6/778 http://home.howstuffworks.com/nail-gun.htm/printable Based on personal experience of having a 16d 3.5" nail hit the palm of my left hand (thank god it happened to be on the back side of a 2x... otherwise I think it would have done some SERIOUS irreversable damage) I firmly believe that a nailgun (not at a range other than point blank) is as capable, and as dangerous, as a .22LR. THIS is a "box of truth"-esque test I could probably do. Any suggestions? I've got access to a variety of nailers ranging from roofing coil nailers to "impulse" (aka internal combustion) framing nailers. |
