Just send it UPS! They didn't give me any problems! I walked in and said I needed to ship it to GLOCK, told them it was a handgun and 10 minutes later I was out the door. Price was a little steep but I don't have to worry about return shipping. As far as the "telling them it is a handgun" I am sure if you are sending it to a manufacturer they will put 2 and 2 together and end up asking you anyway! In the case of sending it to someone for custom work they do require that you have a copy of the FFL that you are shipping to. Also, using the USPS for handguns is a no no (It has been mentioned). Long guns are ok. ETA: BTW, my 32 is going back for a frame replacement. I did some modding to the frame and it didn't turn out as expected so I am getting a replacement frame. Sucks in a way cause I have to get it tranferred into my name again (different SN# on the frame). Just in case some of you were wondering if it had to do with the infamous GLOCK "kB!". Sorry if I took it a little OT!

I have a story about Fed X.
I had taken a (mostly) depleted Cobalt 57 radioactive source to Fed X to be shipped to the mfg for disposal. Federal law stipulates that if the package radiation measures less than .5 MR at the surface with a geiger counter then it does not have to have a rad symbol listing the type of isotope or the amount of activity. It does not have to have a hazmat document but DOES have to have UN2910 listed on the outside of the package which designates that it is considered a limited exempt pkg. The Fed X lady argued with me that ALL UN listed packages MUST have a hazmat document. After some back and forth I asked her to call their regulatory dept. to verify. She said fine but that would not change anything. At one point during the call she replied "Yes I'm trained in UN listings" and this one that almost had me on the floor. "fifteen years". She had obviously been asked just how long had she been working for Fed X. She accepted the package with a very embarrased look on her face while still muttering about how she couldn't see why it did not need a hazmat filled out since it had a UN designation blah blah blah. So if they will take the time to call someone that knows then you will NEVER have a problem out of that particular person again. Egg tends to stick!

The first time I tried to ship a pistol, I went to a local do-all, be-all shipping store that claimed to use UPS and FED X. Walked in the door with my pistol in it's factory plastic case and sat it on the counter. A lady said "Can I help you?". I replied that I had a pistol to ship. She immediately put up both hands in the surrender positon and started backing up. Mind you, at that time I wasn't even touching the case I had set on the counter.I t was all I could do to keep from laughing. She called a co worker who said they couldn't do it. I would have to ship it vis USPS. I said I know that both FED X and ups do ship fireaems. She was very rude and told me I didn't know what I was talking about. As I was leaving I suggested she actually read the shipping regulations. She was still telling me what a dumb ass I was as I was going out the door taking my business and cash elsewhere.
I finnally went to an actual FEd X shipping point and had no trouble at all. It's a shame how ignorance and fear rule some people's lives. Mike |
