A good read if you have some time is this wiki article on Vukovar:

Battle of Vukovar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is like a modern day version of 300.

And one more question since I'm studying education at university (as you Europeans like to call it ).

How do Croatians view teachers? What status (or lack of) do they ascribe to the teaching profession?

In the U.S. teaching is seen as a lesser career. (One common American colloquialism is "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach." Meaning teachers only become teachers because they're unsuited for everything else.) However, in most of the rest of the world teachers are viewed as extremely important and are ascribed very high status.

Not the case in HR (Croatia), they respect the teaching profession as well as the education process a lot more than American kids do that is for sure. Of course you have the punk kids who throw things in class but I think they realize that without an education you cant do much.

Just actually having a job makes you well respected in the community because those are hard to come by these days. It is getting better though!

Oh the teachers over there have to go through a ridiculous amount of further education to get a license to teach. I wish I knew more details but it is quite a process.

To get a permit (to own, not to carry) you need to have a clean record, no history of fammily disputes/problems of any kind and you have to pass the physical exam (including the tests).

You wait for at least 30 days to get a permit and in the meantime, police will pay you a visit to make sure you have proper storage for the firearms and that they're being safely locked.

If they find out you don't have a safe or keep your gun loaded in a drawer accesible to anyone (especially if you have kids in the household), you can kiss your guns goodbye.

As for the fully automatic weapons:

Now a days they have fully automatic "bans" and thats about it. I quote the word bans because this isn't really enforced all that well especially in the more rural areas where my family and myself are from. Picture the wild west kinda atmosphere.
Yes, you -may- get away with owning a full auto rifle in a rural area, but they are illegal and if someone rats you out, you will not only loose your SKS, but get a lifetime ban for owning any firearm, including handguns + you risk jail. Basically, again, New Jersey.

The only difference is, in NJ you don't have to go and pay for all the exams, it's a matter of checking your records and having someone vouch for you (I believe you need two persons).

I never heard of checking for proper storage is that a recent change? I don't live there so I am sure things change often that I am not aware of. What part of HR are you from?

Rijeka city. Yes, it's a common practice during the waiting period for a police to send a LEO check your apartment/house to make sure you have proper conditions for firearm storage.

They usually do this only if you apply for a (new) permit so it's really not a big deal.

The younger generations learn in school and they all learn by watching our movies. It seems like most people over there speak at least 3 languages, typically Serbo-Croatian, English and German.

As for your second question about the economic crisis, they totally blame the US for the current global economic crisis just like the rest of the world. I think we have to swallow a pill as Americans and just raise our hand and say "Ya that was our bad, Sorry". England followed suit however with their banking practices and its not as if we had a gun pointed to their head forcing them to do so.

They don't hate us for it, but they are obviously disappointed. The Croatian economy wasn't exactly a shining star in Europe to being with. Because of this they were probably effected to a lesser extent.

EDIT: Missed your Hemp question; The answer is nope. Just as illegal as the states.
alot of it is americas fault but its also western europes fault as well, when you close up factorys and move them to china, india, taiwan, guam and wheverelse it will never been good for any country in the long run.

america used to export 80% of its goods now its only about 20%. so we import 80% of our goods and only export 20%. and so much of western europe is the same.

now russia is buying chinesse made ak47's. they are doing the same thing. it can't be good to allow china to dominate the worlds economy. its not good for one country to do that. it should be a global economy where everyone can be involved.

but hey thats just my opinion on this.

He was put on trial by the ICTY for genocide (among other things) however we never even saw justice because he died while on trial in the Hague.
