30 years of being safe and it comes down to one bad day. Sad that people can take a life for their own selfish reasons. Never let your guard down. I dont think it would be a bad idea for patrol officers especially if alone to have a vest with ceramic plates. Why do their wear vests under their shirt. I would want the best available.

RIP Lt Vogt, my heart goes out to his immediate family, friends, and fellow officers.
I hope they find these suspects in an expeditious manner!

I hope those scumbags are caught quickly...a shame to lose an officer in such a way.
RIP Lt. Vogt - thank you for your 30 years of service!

RIP, and may the scumbags truly reach justice.
Going into this field, I have to admit I hate hearing these things. Saddens me every time I see the words "Officer Down", regardless of where it was.

I believe the main reason there is weight. Specialty teams that don't have to wear the vest long and not travel far will wear a heavier vest that can stop more, but when you're out on patrol for 8+ hrs and may have to chase down a few bad guys you don't want the weight. In the summer that would be hot too.

The latest is there is a suspect in custody. Word is the Lt. rolled up on him while he was urinating on the side of the road, and the suspect knew he had an active warrant on him and didn't want to go back to jail.
