Hmm, do we have a liberal elitist on the board? Someone who thinks that the great unwashed masses can't be trusted with "horrors!" weapons without a lot of expensive and time consuming training and red tape to weed out the "Not our sort of people don't you know, old chap" undesirables?
Vermont law, and its results refute your entire point. http://www.gunowners.org/vtcarry.htm |

True, people can change if they want to. But to me, if someone commits a crime with a gun once, then I'm not willing to trust them with a gun again. Once you've shown the mentality and ability to commit a serious crime, it's easier for you to do it a 2nd time and so on. I could care less if you murdered 30 people, went to prison for 30 years and came out saying that you found jesus in prison. Good, I'm glad jesus hangs out so much in prison for people to find him.. but I don't care, you killed 30 people and I could care less if you've said you are "reformed" now. If people were trusted to be able to change after every single bad thing they've done in their life, then courts wouldn't use past records against them. A convicted felon would once be able to own a firearm again.. becahse they had changed. But, it doesn't work that way... you prove yourself with your actions, not your intentions. There's consequences for that.

I am not saying a killer can change (unless he's in solitary
I am saying that just because a person commits a crime in his youth, means he will always be a criminal for the rest of his life. There is no black and white answer, this is an area where judgment must be used. |
