.45 ACP 1911 illegal in CA (?)

Can someone verify or clarify this for me. I was at a local Cabelas here in So MN, and overheard a guy trying to purchase a .45 ACP 1911 style model pistol. The guy said he was from California, and that this style of pistol is not allowed there, and he is not able to purchase one there. So, he was trying to work out a way to buy the pistol here, and have it shipped to CA. The salesman correctly told him that if the sale or posession of the pistol is not allowed there, then he wouldn't be able to have it shipped there either. He did give the guy the info for the pistol, and told the guy to talk to a FFL dealer in his home area to clarify the laws. If allowed, have the dealer contact him about purchasing the gun and having it shipped to the dealer for transfer.
Is there some restrction on these pistols there, or is it just possible this guy shouldn't be buying one, here or there?

The 1911 is not restricted by CA law. All guns sold in CA must go through a battery of test and be approved. Perhaps the 1911 they were discussing what not yet approved. The process is very expensive for the manufacturer to complete.

The buyer doesn't know what he is talking about. I can go into any gunstore in Ca. and buy a 1911. Also, I bought one from a member on this forum from out of state and had it shipped to a FFL (gun range).

Now, there is one important thing to know; to be sold in this lovely state, the gun has to pass the "drop" test that is required. A manufacturer has to submit one of every model for testing and provide the ammo, all at their own cost. Nothing is returned.

From the CA Dept. of Justice website:

Quote:
Effective January 1, 2001, no handgun may be manufactured within California, imported into California for sale, lent, given, kept for sale, or offered/exposed for sale unless that handgun model has passed firing, safety, and drop tests and is certified for sale in California by the Department of Justice.
Any gun sold in CA must be approved and on the list.

I decided to search for the brand Kimber, and there are NUMEROUS 1911's on the approved list.

I can only conclude that this guy was:

A) Misinformed about the law.

B) Looking for a specific model/brand of 1911 that was NOT approved.

C) Up to something.

I believe this was a Kimber or or similar well known brand, so it should ok as far as passing any tests. Like i said before, it might just be that this guy probably shouldn't be buying a handgun, here or there. He did appear pretty questionable. So I think I will go with "C".

Perhaps it was a 1911 .45 ACP firearm that has or is known to be coupled with hi capacity magazines which are probably isllegal in California.(I have to brush up on my gun laws) That does sound very shady or the customer was misinformed. It's good to be solid about things otherwise it does make a person very suspicious.

Oni, anything over 10 rounds is illegal in our fair state.

Old School, I know your post is 3 minutes earlier than mine, but could you explain this to me please. When I first saw this post by Blaine, there were no other posts. When I posted mine and then looked at it after it was up (went back to the 1st page), there were only his and mine.

Now, on 3-10, I return to this thread and your post is before mine. What's up with that. I understand we were probably typing our posts around the same time, I don't understand why I could see yours when I was finished with mine, since there is a 3 minute time difference.

If you can explain it in simple computer terms I would appreciate, as I don't want to get a headache. Thanks.

I know Colts and Springfields are ok in CA. because of the safety. Which was there big deal...they had to change them.

Not true. Private party sales of a pistols not on list through
an FFL are exempt as long as not an "assault weapon"
From Ca DOJ

Private party transfers, curio/relic handguns, certain single-action revolvers, and pawn/consignment returns are exempt from this requirement.
What usually goes on is people will leave for awhile and try to
bring back STI`s,etc, other scarce pistols not on the list and sell
them for an inflated price once back in caliban.
