Ummm...there's always the .375 H&H magnum. That tends to be a popular choice with many folks going to Africa. It is more than adequate for hunting anything in North America. If pain is your game, there is a lot more to choose from such as .458 Mag, any of the Nitro Express cartridges, .416 Rigby, .416 mags, .458 Lott, etc. Just do an internet search for Safari rifles. With some of those larger calibers, you can lose some long range accuracy due to the type and shape of bullets used and available. All of those cartridges will put the hurt to game and you as well. If you want something slightly more powerful, check out the .338 Mags. Of course, they have a lot of recoil but they are excellent long range guns. Many folks out here use a .338 lapua round for shooting 1000-2000 yard targets (not game...kinda unethical in my book at that long of a range, but don't want to ruffle any feathers). Hope this helps!

Here's a link you might be interested in. It shows some examples of various rifle cartridges and their resulting muzzle velocities and recoil forces. Pretty interesting stuff...

I found the 458 Winchester rather pleasant to shoot.

The 416 Rigby ain't to bad.

460 Weatherby is touted as the heaviest recoil of any commercially available hunting cartridge.

There also the 577 T-rex 600 Nitro and 700 H&H for some really big stopper cartridges.

50BMG is probably the worse recoiling gun you are legally allowed to own. The bolt action version being more painful then the semi-autos. If that's not bad enough you can take the muzzle break off and it will almost definitely break your collar bone and probably dislocate your shoulder.

It is legal in many states to own a cannon as long as it is a muzzle loading black powder cannon. You could get yourself one of those and shoulder up to it when you light the flash hole. That should knock you on your arse nicely.

hope that helps

You obviously need a .30-378 or 7mm STW.
