Yes, nightraider, if everyone could see Prarie Dog Town and the damage they do in the cattle and cottonfields between Lubbock and Levelland...they'd think its ok to blast prarie poodles.

You ought to see what a 22-250 Ballistic Tip does to those big rats...splat!

So far I've seen 30-06 and 7.62x39 damage from them. I personally use a very upgraded .22LR, buts mine is highly accurate so I make sure they don't suffer.

I'd prefer solid 9mm headshots, clean and no mess, which is what most would prefer most likely.

No, no, for me the mess is half the fun.

I try my best to keep kills clean.(most of the time at least )

It's hard to hunt when other people are watching you, dunno, maybe just anxiety, but that's when things get messy. *laughs*

Hire a latino hunter arm them with said weaponry, they work for cash and do quick work. That's a positive stereotyping of course.

I didn't realize a .223 was used; that's a lot of damage. I learned something new today. I figured a small size cal. could be used and be just as efficient. I guess that depends on the ability of the shooter, huh.

For those who enjoy watching them explode like that; well, everyone is different. I believe that's a little different tho. Nah, I should say what I really mean; I think that's a little sick.

And like I said, I'm not a PITA sympathizer by any means. I also said I don't begrudge hunting and I understand the problem they create. I just had requested a warning of some kind before I ck'd out the thread. Nothing more. I didn't think it was too much to ask.

That would be Colorado. For the most part "hunting" prarie dogs is illegal now. Yes, techinically there are 10 acres that it allowed on (sarcasm) but its really forbiddden. The best hunting tool is a car now. Everyday in the spring through fall there are splatted prarie dogs all over the roads.

That said, there was a "compromise". Colorado law allows landowners (or their agent) to kill the varmints without a hunting license if they are causing "property damage". There is no statory requirement to prove "land damage". So basically, on private property, they can be shot with the landowners permission (as long as its a legal place to shoot).

A Nosler 55gr Ballistic Tip 22-250 round will leave a hole in the center mass of a coyote that you can put your fist through (done it several times)...I cannot imagine, shooting prarie poodles with that round, but from what the guys in Lubbock said, the 220 Swift and 22-250 are their preferred rounds. Not much left for the buzzards to eat...instant tenderization..I guess!

I would think (if you could get close enough...they're wary little bastards) that the 17 HMR might be a good p-dog round at 100-150 yards. I have shot a few raccoons and stray dogs with that round with very explosive results.
