I've been up to an alfalfa farm in northern NV for a pdog shoot. You could shoot 150-200 in 6 hours and still be surrounded by them. They didn't just dig holes, they'd eat about a pound of alfalfa a day each. Multiply that by 1 or 2 million dogs on the ranch and that rancher was losing a BUNCH of money. He couldn't poison them because the poison would get into the alfalfa which was then fed to dairy and beef cows.

The dogs died a lot quicker when hit with a .22-250 than they did when you hit 'em with a .22LR solid tip. I don't see any problem with instantly annihilating them as opposed to watching them drag their paralyzed lower bodies down into a hole to die painfully. Just my thoughts...

same thing in western Colorado. We would use 22-250 or 223, sometimes 30.06 or other big game gun. BTW the dogs blow up like that with a .223 not exactly a CANNON.

Yeah, they're not an endangered species...and they do alot of damage.

Yes, nightraider, if everyone could see Prarie Dog Town and the damage they do in the cattle and cottonfields between Lubbock and Levelland...they'd think its ok to blast prarie poodles.

You ought to see what a 22-250 Ballistic Tip does to those big rats...splat!

I see both sides to this. I'm not easy about wholesale slaughter but if my livelihood depended on it...

What are the natural predators to these things? Any options as far as trying to reintroduce whatever should be eating them?

Hawks and great horned owls can get the smaller ones, but the bigger prarie dogs can be gotten by only the fastest coyotes, but thats rare.

Big problem is that in some of the areas in West Texas, near bigger cities like Lubbock and Amarillo, there are very few coyotes and the owls and hawks cannot get all of them. They breed like rabbits and multiply fast.

Introducing some other preditor is always dicey. It seems the more we try to mess with what should be in an area the worse it gets.

What about ferrets? I know they are starting to reintroduce them in parts of Arizona.

They are referred to as "varmints" for a reason!!!!! Ground hogs are the PD's of PA. and I personally have no problem with dispatching them and letting them lay! Some may say that is doesn't make me much of a hunter but after seeing some of the damage that they do...it's unreal!!!!! Granted, whistle pigs don't do as much damage as a PD but it's close enough!
