I've had 19 broken bones {only once did I do 2 at a time...} torn the crap out of both knees, have had the cartilage taken out of both knees, a separated shoulder, and more stitches and butterfly's than I can count {and I wondered why my family called me Kamikaze....} but the most painful episode was when the herniated disc in L4-L5 ruptured.....I woke up and basically could not move. The funny thing was no pain at all in my back...all down the left leg. Felt like I had torn the quadriceps, ripped the hamstring, blew out the knee again, cut open the calf, broke the ankle and smashed my foot all at the same time. Having done all of those at one time or the other was nothing compared to that rupture....

First doc I went to wanted to do surgery right then...I waited, got a 2nd opinion a few days later....and so far, I have been able to hold off the surgery.....but it will be there someday.

Yup, similar to my story Bowser. I opted out of surgery and went to a chiropractor instead. 15 years later, my back only gets sore if I sit or stand for a long time, but pretty much pain free otherwise.

Back in '02 I shattered my right tib/fib while swooping, i.e. high performance parachute landing.
Two (2) plates and fourteen (14) screws to put it back together, four months of painful rehab and another year before it felt normal.

Whilst in the ER, discovered that I'm basically immune to the effects of alkaloid drugs, such as morphine.
Three hours and three doses later the anesthesiologist confirmed it it for the doctor, and only because I threatened a lawsuit if I didn't get a pain killer that worked.
Thank God for Demerol!

My original description of events to my fellow jumpers.

Dropzone.com Skydive Forums: Skydiving: Gear and Rigging: Crash and Burn
Quote:
I the great Chile Relleno crashed and burned while enjoying the blue skies in Davis,CA at Skydance Skydiving this last saturday 08/24...

There I was swooping into the landing area, it looked good and felt good so I went for it! ALAS I had failed to properly inspect my landing area before jumping at this new playground. The area I'd chosen looked like a nice gravel surface to surf in on but was in fact deep pea gravel and my right foot dug in on touchdown while the rest of me kept going!!!

Result, severe spiral fracture of both the tibia and fibula, yes both of them!
I knew what was happening to me as it was happening (really weird feeling)I tumbled to a stop, confirmed what I already knew and let everyone within a country mile know that I was hurt. The DZ staff was great providing first aid and transportation to and from the Hospital in Davis and in gathering a few belongings out of my truck and getting me on the the next flight home to Mobile,AL. They even shipped my gear home to me.

So the next morning I check into the hospital and that afternoon I'm in surgery and two (2) gnarly incisions, two (2) plates, fourteen (14) screws and 3.5 days later I'm here at home to recuperate for the next four (4) months. It looks UGLY (I'll post pics later) and hurts like hell, even while pumped full of Demerol and some asst'd other meds, the only real relief is sleep.

The moral to this story,
"CHECK YOUR LANDING AREAS WHEN AT UNFAMILiAR DZ'S"

I will jump again, live and learn, crash and burn, Chile Relleno.

Pancreatitus last Christmas. Spent the holiday in the hospital. Morphine didn't help at all but they gave me something else that did the job. Don't remember what it was but I had halucinations from it. I've had women tell me that is more painful than childbirth.

Treating Snake Bites
I had heard that, I actually did everything that list says not to. I may be wrong in my thinking but I got the idea that doing none of that is great if you're going to seek medical attention promptly and let the pros do what they do best. I knew I wasn't going to a doctor. So I did what I had to do. I had always heard not to cut, that it could cause an infection, and not to suck because you could have a sore or something in the mouth that would allow the venom to enter there as well. I was about 99% sure I didn't have any mouth sores and I held a match to a piece of glass for what seemed like hours trying to make sure I killed any germ. I was pretty desperate at the time and thought any of the things I did would be a plus without medical attention. I basically did a do it yourself version of what is included in most snakebite kits. (Small vial of iodine, razorblade and suction cup).

I definitely wouldn't recommend doing anything I did and to seek medical attention though if you're able.

Arrow Broken tail bone.

I fell on the ice, and broke my tail bone. It didn't hurt all that bad at the time, but it hurt for at least 3 months after that to sit down! Literally had to sit on one butt cheek at a time, but get up every half hour or so or it would ache, and sleep on my side with a pillow between my legs. I was told there was little they could do other than painkillers. For about the first month it was a stabbing pain every time I sat down wrong. It also hurt to take a big step, or other too much leg movement. Other than that it was a dull ache. After about month, it hurt a lot less, but it still sucked. I still can't sit for more than a couple hours at a time, or I get that ache right at the top of my butt crack.

A close second was a sprained ankle, and broken bone in my foot at the same time. Was walking in the dark, and stepped in a deep tire rut. I didn't go to the hospital until the next day, only went because the swelling was getting really bad. They did an X-ray, and missed the broken bone in my foot (I was told this was because of swelling). So they sent me home with an ace bandage, and some vicodin. My foot didn't heal right, I can feel where the bone healed crooked. Took a couple months before it healed to where I could walk without a limp. Still hurts sometimes, still have a bump on my foot. Makes my foot cramp, swell, and ache, especially when I walk a lot.

Crushed 2 vertebrae 3 years ago, sledding accident. Priapism (google it) as a side effect for a week or so. That was painful, on both counts. I've broken my foot, my hands, most of my fingers and toes at one point, all pretty painful. Nothing ever compared to this...

I July of this year, I was doing some continuing training for my department. Fighting a "padded assailant". The "padded assailant" is also a LEO, who is around 6'4" and 280ish. And 14-0 in MMA. He wrapped me up and slammed me on the point of my shoulder. Dislocated my shoulder and snapped my collar bone. The ends of my collar bone pointed inwards and impaled a large bundle of nerves. I cannot describe the pain. Tears streamed down my cheeks, but I wasn't crying. Morphine did absolutely nothing.

Fast forward 14 weeks. Repeat story, with a different "padded assailant". Apparently my doctor was a little premature in releasing me back to full duty. I should have surgery sometime in January to repair what's left of my clavicle.
