Pictures of your gun with serial # next to it

I just took my MO ccw class today after moving here from TX last month. The instructor brought up a good point and a suggestion. Under MO state law(and other states possibly) if your gun(any gun) is confiscated by the police for any reason, you have to be able to prove that the gun is indeed yours to be able to get it back. Since we do not have a national gun registry and the 4473 form you fill out for purchase is kept by the gun shop(who is not required to release it to you, only the ATF, as far as I understand it) there is no record of guns bought or sold from a serial # perspective(as we like it).

His suggestion was to take a piece of white paper from your printer, print out the serial number in large letters, place the gun on the paper with the serial number below it and take a picture. Then take these pictures(or the digital copy on a memory stick) and put them in a lock box or other safe. This ensures that you can provide your local police(or other agency) with a record of a picture of your gun and the serial number to prove ownership.

Does anybody do this?
Is this a good idea or complete ****?

The instructor is a high ranking officer for a local city so I dont think he was feeding us a line of horse ****. It just seems like something so simple that nobody does and everybody should do.

I am contemplating doing this for the reasons he pointed out as well as possibly insurance issue's if they arise. Just wanted to get others input.

I think it is probably a good idea it certainly couldn't hurt. You can also save your sale papers which should indicate serial number as well. Or simply take a picture of the firearm with the serial number in the picture. It certainly is a good idea for insurance pictures.

Wouldn't a better idea be to get a close-up (macro mode) picture of the actual serial # of the gun alongside your CCW/CHL/LTCF to prove both posession and identification?

I keep all the copies of my 4473s.

My brother had to prove ownership of his pistol (as it was confiscated by the police). We kindly asked the gunshop if they could make a copy of the 4473, and they did.

The fella I deal with makes me a photocopy of the 4473, and I keep them in a 3-ring binder.

So, someone could go on this site in the picture thread and print out all the gun pics with serial numbers. Go to Tx and claim ownership of all these guns...

I have every receipt for every gun I've ever bought in a fire proof safe.

just remember where you bought your firearm BATFE requires FFL holders to hold all 4473's for 20 years so pick one gun shop that you love to go to and buy all your guns there and you wont have any problems

also is is always wise to keep all your paper work that you acquired from the purchase
