Just a FYI, self-created electronic records like the GunSafe program or an Excel spreadsheet aren't going to be admissible in court or such as proof of ownership, since it is easy to fake. Keeping copies of your 4473s makes the most sense. Of course, keep your own records for your own purposes, but if you ever need a record for legal purposes, the 4473 would probably be your best bet.

I have all of my reciepts in a safe place. In addition my local PD and the State Police have copies of those records. Because in Michigan the registration of all handguns is mandatory. While I don't favor registration, it does provide some small benefit to those who have to live under it's thumb.

As others have said, it sounds like a good idea and certainly couldn't hurt.
All the firearms I have now I have the sales slips from, with the exception of two. One was given to me by a friend, and the other is a ruger 10/22 that my dad gave me for my birthday when I was like 9 or 10. Interestingly when I was 18, The delinquent neighbor kids broke into our house and stole my 10/22 along with a bunch of my model cars and other "toys". Based on what was stolen and how they got in it wasn't hard to figure out who stole it, the kids were like 10 to 12 years old. The police returned all my stuff, (badly damaged at this point), except for the rifle which they held as evidence for a while. When I got the rifle back they didn't require anything more than my drivers license to pick it up. Fortunately they didn't destroy the gun like they did the other stuff, it looked like they never took it out of the case. |

Good point. On the gunsafe program though, you can store photos of everything you own and save it within the program. Plus you can store the info of where you purchased, just in case you lost your receipt or forgot where you baught it. So that works for me. But I agree about keeping a copy of the 4473 as best.
