Can anyone identify this WWII era knife? (large pics inside)

Ok, this was given to me by my grandfather back in the day. I can't remember the story of it at all, except that its from WWII. He passed away years ago so I can't really ask him about it anymore I'm not sure if he made it, or if someone else made it or whatever. I think the handle is actually an ammunition shell of some sort?

In the following pic, I tried to focus in on the lettering/numbering. It reads: P1g38 and directly the right of that is a very, very small symbol which immediately reminded me of the n a z i iron eagle symbol

minus the swastika in its grasp

On the blade, "CHERBOURG 1945" has been engraved:

The end cap unscrews:

Honestly, its probably something that my grandfather made while he had down time over in Europe, but who knows?!

I'm not sure what he did in the Army, but I do know that he was an engineer for GE for his civilian career. The blade is about 6" long, give or take a half-inch.

without a doubt thats a 20mm projectile for the handle, i have one just like it.(the bullet that is) the aluminum tip unscrews and it also has the driving band at the other end and the rest is steel. its an explosive round with the explosives removed and the fuse removed from the aluminum tip.
im 100% sure on the handle.... the rest i dont know.

oh and its not the 20mm round that the US uses today, its some other variation, there are dozens of different 20mm rounds each country pretty much had their own

Ok. I'm wrong on all counts. Why would the steel have those bands around it and why would a projectile have an aluminum tip?

the bands are called driving bands that are common on 20mm projectiles and larger, the aluminum tip holds the fuse, my guess is because its softer and can guarantee it will set the fuse off

this isnt the same projectile but the idea is the same

here is another pic of a similar 20mm projectile with its case

It is also possible that it was made from a training round. Those, sometimes, were all aluminum, or had aluminum tips.
