Just finished a Time article that states that 49% of the adults in Detroit are "functionally illiterate". That might have something to do with the high unemployment there.

Detroit seems to me to be nothing more than a Third World country inside the US.

No no no. Didn't you hear!? The economy that he inherited (From W, of course!) was WAY worse than they originally thought. It's still all W's fault!

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, the Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

As I said before the election.

Change is not always good. Like when your wife comes to you and says "Things are going to change around here."

Yep!

Many of us..even on the right...thought Bush was crappy, but trading crappy for very crappy was not change we could stomach.

Not that McCain inspired much confidence....partly he is to blame for Obama, if you ask me. Obama should have been easily creamed but McCain just could not do it.

I don't know who ran McCain's campaign but I hope Michael Steele sees that they are not fit to sweep the ailes at the next convention, let alone run another campaign.

"The recession is over"..."The economy is improving"...Liberal democrat "pie in the sky" bs...How in the world can things improve when so many people are out of work? And where are the jobs for these unemployed workers? In Mexico,India,Nicarauga,etc...
I don't see things improving any time soon;there is very little,if any, confidence in the American consumer right now.

We are starting to see it show up here in Texas, too.

Pretty much everyone I know in the oil and petrochemical biz is in a holding pattern - just keeping the wheels turning and not hiring new people or adding new equipment or other improvements. We're not going down (yet) but basically alot of our industry is waiting and holding their collective breaths on the cap and trade nonsense they're trying to pass through. This has the potential to turn Houston into Detriot.

So yeah, we'd love to add on to our business, buy new equipment where needed or expand but thats a huge risk right now...not knowing how our industry will be looking in the near future. Not to mention everyone else doing the same means not alot of new business to build on.

So yeah, even though we have not been as hard-hit as many northern states, the hope and change crew has had a negative effect. That effect is very little growth and activity. Very few new hires or new ventures. I even see a real slowdown of construction both residential and commercial and even a year ago there was still quite a bit of commercial construction going on even if the resiential slowed down.

This is the real bummer of of the Age of Obama: the guy not only makes some already bad state economies worse but the decent ones are not inspired one bit to grow or add on or move forward.

Its as if there is a suffocating blanket placed over prosperity in this country. Sad, really.
