Goto:

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

and then use their new feature called pingtest. It is designed to rate your connection for it's ability to handle streaming content well. Over all average speed is only part of the picture. Pingtest is the rest of the picture.

I'm getting the stop and stutter on youtube also.

For a while I thought maybe it was Time Warner trying to throttle my service. Guess not.

Are you guys with Youtube problems using a Netgear router by any chance?

If so, try disabling the SPI firewall. Apparently this is designed to prevent denial-of-service attacks, so disabling it won't hurt home users. I had a Netgear router, and disabling the SPI firewall solved the video stuttering issue. Here's a link on the subject:

Netgear WGR614 v7: streaming media problem! - NETGEAR Forums

Even after solving that problem, I had other web-surfing problems that couldn't be cured . . . so my lovely (cheap) Netgear router ended up looking like this:

I'm now sailing along trouble-free with a Linksys WRT54GL (blue router in the photo) . . . .

I have had two or three videos on youtube this week stop playing at the 2:29 mark. The rest of the video will buffer, but they don't play past 2:29. Pretty weird.

I get that every now and then, too.

I used to think it might be my computer, but I am running a Del Studio with 4 gigs of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and a high rpm drive....not exactly a slow machine.

I have come to the conclusion that its the internet connection. I am using a DSL cable modem and Comcast service, but I swear...sometimes the service gets bogged down and slow. Maybe peak useage? I dunno.

Try re-setting your connection or re-starting your modem when this happens. Sometimes that will stop the constant buffering that I get.

Hm... DSL and Cable Modems are two different technologies. Generally that's an either/or type of thing.

My guess is bandwidth (checkable with the Internet speedtest that was posted higher up in the thread), or system resources. 4GB of RAM can get sucked up pretty quick depending on what all is running and the operating system.

But then again, I haven't been up to date on the technical side of IT in years... so take my diagnosis with a grain of salt...

I get 16 up and 4 down at home. Using Chrome, FireFox and IE8 I couldn't watch a video the other night on YouTube for the life of me. When paused, it wouldn't even buffer.

I read something to other day about how youtube traffic now consumes as much internet bandwidth as the entire internet did 5 years ago. Don't know if it's true, but it is interesting.

Bottome line is YouTube is growing faster than they are able to keep up with.
