Girl hit by stray 9mm--South of Drake, MO

WIRE REPORTS
11/03/2009

A 3-year-old girl from Gasconade County, Mo., is hospitalized in critical condition at a St. Louis hospital after being shot in the head Monday.

Allison M. Schneider, 3, was walking in a farm yard Monday afternoon when a stray bullet hit her in the left temple, according to the Gasconade County Republican newspaper.

The incident happened along Route EE south of Owensville, Mo. The girl was taken by helicopter to St. Louis Children's Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.

Sheriff's investigators told the newspaper that they believe the girl was hit by a stray 9 mm round fired toward a target. The weapon would have been fired a distance of about three football fields away from where the girl was struck, police say.

The neighbor who may have been firing at the target was cooperating with police and surrendered a 9 mm handgun and a rifle. The handgun had been fired but the rifle had not, the Gasonade County sheriff told the newspaper.

Wow!! I hope she recovers.

This stuff always amazes me though. Think about the timing and position of everything. How crazy, although tragic, but how crazy is it that everything happened at just the right time for this to happen? This guy was 3 football fields away and accidentally hit a moving object. There's people who can't hit a moving target at 50'!

Wow! Prayers for the girl.

And again, make sure you know what you are shooting, and what is behind what you are shooting at.

To get a round to go 900' he would have had to have a pretty good angle up. Around 25-35%? What the hell could he have been shooting at? A passing bird?

He's under investigation. It was probably either surrender, or they would be confiscated.

I thought about that, but there is no way of knowing without seeing the topography. Elevation can change a lot in 300 yards, and it would only need to be a feet difference in elevation in order to not hit dirt at that range.

Possibly. I remember a Mythbusters episode where they fired a .45 at 0% angle.

The bullet only traveld about 400 feet before ending up in the dirt.

I'm surmising he would need an angle to get the bullet to travel that far.

Either way, tragic story.

Sad. I would imagine people who are lucky enough to have property they can shoot on would also be smart enough to use some sort of decent backstop. I guess not. Tragic all around, hope she makes it.
