Bow hunters

I transitioned form a Horton crossbow last December back to a compound again after 11 years or so.

Last week I sighted my bow in all the way back to 70 yards and Im holding 6" groups. I don't know that I will take a deer at that distance but I sure would feel confident doing so if I had the need.

Im shooting a Mission (by Mathews) X3 with an HHA single pin sight and a QAD Ultra rest. I have a 3 arrow quiver in the picture but I took it off and put it on my sons bow, I now have a Treelimb 5 arrow quiver. Arrows are Goldtip hunters with NAP Spitfire XP pro series 100 grain 3 blades. I'm only drawing around 62 lbs. due to a shoulder injury but if I have surgery after deer season, I hope to be able to crank it up to 70 lbs. for next year.

Anyone else sight their bow in at such a long distance? I read an article that said alot of folks outwest in the open areas sight their bows in out to 80 yards. I wanted to see if I could do it and was VERY impressed that my bow would acually shoot so well at such a distance.

I had a really good proshop set my bow up for me and the sight is a single pin like this...

It allows for almost infinate sighting opprotunities. I didn't use the pre printed tapes, I chose to mark mine on my own and then I put a clear piece of tape over it to water proof the markings.

Try shooting further, its really not as hard as I thought it would be. I just backed up 10 yards at a time. My sight is set rom 20 all the way to 70 in 10 yard increments.

i went from a crossbow to a compound and now back to a crossbow. I was shooting a Matthews Outback. Now Excalibur cross. I never shot beyond 40 with compound but my crossbow is accurate and i am pretty confident to 60 yards. I shot one at 50 last year and double lunged her. I wont ever shoot a deer beyond that and prefer to stick with 40 and in.

I gave my daughter my crossbow (she's 13) and very petite, strong for her size but unable to draw a bow at 40 lbs. right now, which is our states minimum draw weight.

I have it sighted in out to 50 yards but told my daughter she should stay at no more than 30 since she's a new shooter.

I've shot back to 80-85 yards and was able to hold arrows on "the cube" target pretty easy. When the wind is down. But even a small breeze at 80 yards can drift an arrow more than you would imagine.

Take the example of 80 yards (or 240 ft) and a 10 mph breeze when shooting a bow with 300fps speed. The arrow needs 240/300 or 0.8 seconds to go from the bow to the target. Actually, a bit longer as the arrow is slowing down. Now a 10 miles per hour is 10 * 5280 ft per hour or --> 52800 ft per hour. There are 3600 seconds in an hour, so that's 52800/3600 ft per second or 14.67 ft per second. In 0.8 seconds that's 11' 8" of wind motion. The arrow won't move that distance, but it can and does move. The amount depends on the cross section area of the arrow, it's weight, etc. It's pretty easy for it to move 1-2 ft in a 10 mph breeze.

Sorry for the math lesson, but wounding a deer is more painful that math!

I pretty much have the same setup as you. Mathews LX 316fps gold tip arrows with QAD rest. I have a 5 pin sight but my 3rd pin down is set at 50 yards. That is the furthest I shoot with it, but on a deer 30 yards is my max. To be honest, 10 yards is the furthest I have shot a deer with it.

I wouldn't take a 70 yard shot unless it was absolutely ideal conditions.

Gunzzi, I think the furthest I have shot a deer has been 25 yards.
I love this sight because there are no mistaking what pin your shooting or remembering which pin is which.

I practice with my broadheads out to 60 yards, and can group 3 inside of 6" at that range. Are your groups with field points or broadheads? There is a world of difference in shooting broadheads.

I'm as far 'west' as you can get (hunt duck in SF Bay for eample). I think my farthest bow kill was 22 yards for deer, elk or pigs.

Bow tuning is needed for broadheads, I'd send you to a local archery pro shop instead of telling you how to do it yourself. If you want to try, the Easton Archery Tuning Guide is the 'bible', if you can't find it on the web (Easton didn't have it on their own web site last I checked- makes no sense) I uploaded it to texasbowhunter.com so guys could access it easily.

Im shooting NAP Spitfires which shoot as close to fieldpoints as you can get (I think). I really need to go to the pro shop and have my bow paper tuned so I can get the most out of it. Like I said, its funt o shoot out to 70 yards and nice to know you can but I too have only shot deer out to 25 yards.
