As far as the waiting period goes, I've both heard and read that the time period for the feds to do the check for issuing the CCP IS the waiting period in some states...so once you have the permit you are good to go with a same-day transaction.

We don't have the waiting period here in NC per say, as one has to have either the CCP or a Purchase Permit which is basically a lesser depth background check permitting the purchase of a gun (1 gun per permit). Those take a week so the same thought process would apply to the purchase permit if the dingbats in the State Govt wanted to mandate the waiting or "cooling off" period.

In NH after checking a bunch of boxes, the back ground check happens faster than you can count out your Money...

I've gone to the shooting range dozens of times now over the last year or so and have been anxiously awaiting my 21st birthday (Nov12) so that I can buy my own finally.

I am planning on buying a Beretta 92FS from a guy I work with as well as buying an XD or XDM from a local store. I prefer shooting the XDs but the 92FS is such a great deal I cannot pass it up.

The Beretta will be a private transaction and as I understand it, there is no need for any paperwork. Regardless of necessity, I plan on doing some sort of bill of sale/receipt to show that I do actually own the gun.

As far as buying a new gun at a store (I'm in TX) what exactly is the process? I know they do a background check but what else? I know the gun shop will take care of everything when I go in to purchase it but I'm just curious.

I was talking to a friend about buying a gun online and having it shipped to an FFL holder and having it transferred. He said that some people who have an FFL operate out of their homes and just do the transfers as a side job to make a little extra income. However, he told me to avoid the smaller dealers and go to a larger, reputable gun store but if it all gets sent in to the ATF or wherever, what does it matter who or where you buy from?

Anybody care to explain the gun purchasing process to a noob? TIA
you have shot the berretta right? nice guns remember to clean the hammer spring, careful on the grip screws slow and steady so you don't strip them out.

Geesh, exactly how do people think they determine how many cots will be needed for the FEMA camps? It's not guesswork folks!

Yes I've shot it. It's a nice gun but I'm not a huge fan of the DA/SA action. It's not bad though and I figure I might as well learn how to shoot different types of guns.

In addition in most large retail sports stores after purchase confirmation, a salesclerk will carry the gun out the store for you, sign it out at customer service (recording sale and SS), then carry it out the door THEN hand it to you once outside.

Then it's yours....

This is worth doing IMO. My dad didn't include his social with his last purchase, and there was a week delay before the NICS check went through. The dealer said he sees that happen way more often when people don't include their social.

NICS can only delay 3 business days. If the dealer hasn't had a response within that time period, he can deliver the gun to the purchaser. That's the law.

Federal Bureau of Investigations - National Instant Criminal Background Check System - Guide for Obtaining your FBI Identification Record

Quote:
Snip...The NICS Examiner will provide the FFL with the date of the third business day after the firearm check was initiated. Business days do not include the day the check was initiated, Saturdays, Sundays, and any day state offices in the state of purchase are closed. If the FFL has not received from the NICS a final determination after three business days have elapsed since the delay response, it is within the FFL’s discretion whether or not to transfer the firearm (if state law permits the transfer). If the FFL transfers the firearm, the FFL must mark “No resolution was provided within three business days” on line 21d of the ATF Form 4473. It is recommended the FFL record the date provided in the delay response on which the firearm may be lawfully transferred under federal law if a final determination of proceed or denied is not received from the NICS.

Thanks for the info Frenchy. Dad's took a full seven days. I wonder if that dealer didn't know that, just won't sell a gun without approval, or if there is a state law pertaining to it. I've read every state law I can find regarding firearms and have never seen anything, so I would say it's a dealer issue.

I believe the dealer was being extra cautious, even though he cannot be held accountable if he follows their policy.
