I've always thought that we should elect a president befor the age of 18...While they still know everything.

GBS, I do not know you personally but I've been on here for awhile now and I can tell that you are a good person man. Like other people have said, you have to follow the decisions that you think are right. My mom told me awhile back that God will not put more on your plate than you can handle. He knows exactly how much you can take. I am not trying to get all religious or spiritual, but the older I get, and I'll be 27 in Oct, I find that prayer is very powerful and it helps to pray as much as you can. As a God fearing man myself, one of my best friends told me that the order in your life should be God, wife, then your children. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I sincerly feel you are doing what is right and I have faith in you man as I'm sure we all do.

We live OK, but certainly not extravagantly. Who can afford that?
I wonder sometimes because some of my neighbors go out to eat almost every night. That gets pricey real quick, especially when they have 4 kids!
I've seen things like that, too, people whose incomes couldn't be much different than ours living it up like there was no tomorrow. We couldn't figure out how they could afford it.
But then it became clear. They don't donate money to charity (we do, a pretty decent amount). They don't have any life insurance so if they die, the state gets the bill and the kids get the short end of the stick. They don't have health insurance of any quality. They don't put money away in educational accounts for their children. In other words, they've abrogated their responsibility as parents and citizens to insulate themselves and their family from tough times, or to invest in the future.
And maybe they'll get away with it. All I know is that I would be remiss if I expected others to shoulder the responsibility for my family. I won't let that happen. Let 'em eat out all the time. It's not my problem. It'll be theirs.

Well, whatever it turns out to be, I don't think it's going to be pretty. Government controlled medicine is a turn toward socialism. The more money they tax out of "The People", the more control the govt gets. Rush is a bit extreme, true. But look at the bafoonery that has been going on (HUGE Bailout, Govt making corporate decisions for GM, the banks NOT allowed to pay back bailout moneys, ACORN corruption, schoolchildren indoctrinations, etc.), and this is only the first 8 months... A lot of these things reek of certain past world leaders in Italy and Germany.
But I digress - this is not the original topic, and this is also not in the PV.
I don't buy all that "socialism" stuff. Obama is smart enough to understand that it doesn't work.
I look at the examples you give somewhat differently. The bailouts look bad from vantage point of today, but what about last fall? I will tell you that I have *never* been as scared as I was last fall after the collapse of Lehman Brothers. We were very, very close to a meltdown.
The initial bailouts were promulgated by whose administration? Bush's, that's whose. So to lay those at the feet of Democrats, as some Republicans are trying to do today, is rather disingenuous.
ACORN is just a screwup. It's not symptomatic of policy, any more than Bernard Madoff is.
Schoolchildren indoctrinations? I haven't seen any. Anyone who thinks a single speech is going to indoctrinate anybody hasn't been out in the world trying to change hearts and minds.
GM? The government is making decisions for GM because GM hasn't been able to effectively do that for itself. I don't believe Obama wants GM's problems on his plate, but there they are. The alternative was to let GM go under, a prospect that might have crippled a very fragile economy.
And as far as that goes, one cannot give government money--OUR money--indiscrimnately to GM without some strings attached. People were screaming for accountability. At least we have some.
And as far as health care goes, I'd be darned if I can see the socialism in all of it. The existing system only serves a certain fragment of our population. Is it desirable to have everybody have access to at least tolerable health care resources? If you say it is, then the question is how to bring it about. Republicans cannot be the source of this answer--they had years in which to solve the problem; they declined.
I can't see any scenario under which I lose the ability to choose. That's DOA, and as congress goes through this exercise, they're learning what people want and demand.
So, I don't see the world the same way you do. I view our biggest threats as energy, the economy (put the dollar in there as you like), overpopulation, and food supply. Those are, IMO, the things that will bring us down. I hope they don't, but I'm planning as if they might.

Back to the original thought, you're not alone brother. However, don't let cynicism become your way. You're doing the best you can to uphold the honor of being the head of the household.
It will resonate with your daughter. Truly.
Those things we fought so hard against as teenagers reside within us as adults as we get older. My father is my hero. Plain, and simple. He never fought a war, he retired from the fire department, and never asked for accolades, or awards. He took care of us, and never realized the lessons he was providing.
Keep doing the job you're doing. I guarantee, I MEAN UNEQUIVOCALLY, your daughter? Will marry a man who reminds her of you.
I am the breadwinner of the family, the protector of the family. I watch the politics and the stock market every single day to ensure our security. I make sure we pay the mortgage on time, every time. I make sure there is food on the table, that the lights don't go out, that we have phone service.
... and all I ask in return is that I get the big piece of chicken! j/k that's a Chris Rock routine.
Lot's of good comments on this. Here's something I just saw today:
“In ancient societies men were the watchmen to protect their families from being eaten, taken by competing tribes, and other dangers. They provided a realm of safety where their family could let down their guard knowing that the man would not let his down and they would be safe. Being the rock means being the protector, the watchman, the provider. Today our loved ones rely on us to provide a safe realm where they can allow themselves to let their guard down emotionally and physically. They know they can break down emotionally and we’ll still be there standing strong. They know we will get up in the middle of the night with a baseball bat and check that noise they heard downstairs. They know that you will not belittle them like their peers at school, work, church, etc. Being the rock means providing a place where they can find love, understanding, emotional safety, physical safety, and acceptance. Be the man. Be the rock.”
Of course, when I get up in the middle of the night to check a noise, I'm carrying an XD45, not a Louisville Slugger, but the concept applies.
You're doing what you perceive needs to be done. You are being a man.
