I saw a guy shoot a revolver with his hand resting in front of the cylinder, he learned the hard way!

I like the idea of posting "clowns" at the range stories. The range I go to does not allow more than double taps if it is crowded. When there are just a few guys that the range monitor knows, he let's us empty the magazines if we want to. I tried it once but quickly learned that it was a waste of money for me (I hit paper but it looked like I was using a shotgun).

Seems like the slide would get his right thumb.

Yet it doesn't.
Some shooters prefer to leave their thumbs in contact with the side of the frame, while others prefer to hold them away. The advantage of this hold is that it prevents "thumbing" for one thing. Also, the major advantage in my opinion is that the meaty pad of the palm of the supporting hand completes the 360 degree contact on the grip of the weapon. Firm pressure on the front and back of the grips with the shooting hand, coupled with pressure on the sides exerted by both the shooting and support hands result in extremely good control of the weapon. It practically tracks back onto target on its own. With the crossed thumb grip, there is a gap (usually) between the palm of the support hand and the grip.

You need to get his book. This guy and Rob Leatham are legends in pistol shooting. They developed many of the shooting techniques use by all the top shooters. If you're going to get one book to improve your shooting this is the one.

The female shooter I was describing had her LEFT thumb over her Right thumb, directly below the back of the slide.
O.k. now, let's all grab our XD's and try this together...hold up your Right hand...good...now your Left hand...good...now grab your weapon...ready...LEFT thumb over RIGHT thumb...if you did it correctly, it should feel very incorrect...not like the guy in the picture. Did I not describe it properly the first time, or is the crossed-thumb-under-the-slide technique one I'm not aware of? |
