day before yesterday i was at an indoor range

1. (was not attributed to idiots just luck of the draw) i was hit by a ricochet on the upper cheek not hard but it did burn.

2. someone shot the metal target holders, the bullet went in to the ceiling and hit one of the florescent lights making it rain glass. It was the funniest thing ever and i promptly left the range

The same thing happened to a guy I know last tuesday when we were shooting. A ricochet hit a piece of metal and came back hitting him in the leg. The scary thing I forgot my eye protection and ran back to the truck for it.

I did this once with my .44 mag. Put a target center too close to the target holder and it ricocheted up and hit BOTH 8' lights. I was alone in the bay so I changed the lamps and swept-up the glass for the RO because he was busy.... and he let me keep shooting but was watching me on and off.

It was funny the next day.

These posts are scary. Here's my INDOOR range story...

I'd just finished shooting at the local indoor range and was in the process of gathering my gear up. The guy in the lane next to me backs away from the line and we started chatting. He had just bought a brand new 9mm and was shooting it for the first time.

You know how when someone tosses you a ball from across the room, you don't think, you just instinctively catch it? The guy with the new gun says "What do you think of this? Don't worry. It's not loaded." And thrusts it into my hand. Instinctively, I took a hold. Unfortunately, by that time, my body had turned so that when I got a grip on the gun, it was pointed at the Range officer and two customers who were just checking in. I was stunned. But I quickly pointed the pistol down range.

Fortunately, I ALWAYS keep my finger out of the trigger guard and I ALWAYS check to see if the weapon is loaded. With the weapon pointed down range, I removed the magazine and racked the slide, and, sure as s4!t, out pops a live round!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I handed him his gun back and left.

I could not believe how one second I was standing there chatting, the next, I was pointing a loaded pistol in a unsafe direction. Absolutely, unbelievable.

And an outdoor story...

Parts of this country are still wide open. You want to shoot? Just go out of town, pull off the road, and start blasting.

So, I'm 5 or 6 miles south of Moab, Utah on a little forest service road that heads east into the mountains. I drove back and forth a couple of miles looking for a reasonably flat spot where I could get away from the road AND have a sufficient hill slope down range for a backstop.

I had a blast poking holes in coffee and soup cans.

Just as I'm finishing up, I hear two shooters blasting away just down the road from me. This stuck me as odd. I had already staked out the only safe place to shoot along this mile of road. What were these guys doing??

Turns out then were on TOP of the adjacent little hill firing south. Not only did they not have a back stop, but the elevation of the hill made a great launching pad that assured that their rounds would travel farther than they otherwise would.

You gotta love guys like this.

You can get some awesome looking glasses made for shooting like I did for not a lot of cash. They look like sunglasses. Check this place out. Shooting Safety Glasses I got the crews desperado smoke lenses and black frame. They don't seem to have the one now but they have other color choices. Very comfy and stylish.

The scariest thing I've seen at the range is the all-too-often occurrence of the person in the stall next to me thinking he was out of ammo...and actually still having one round chambered. Fortunately, the discovery of the last round never came with a sad ending, but a really pale-face/flustered look of "wholly crap."

My scariest moment was as a teen, while shooting in the mountains with a friend, we found the "skeleton" of a very old, abandoned cabin. My friend entered first with is .22. I came right behind him with my .22. As soon as i stepped up/in, he swung the firearm around right at me/inches over my head and screamed and took a shot. I was overwhelmingly alarmed and ducked (but obviously the shot was already taken). (His "excuse" was he was alarmed by a rat, and so he shot at it.) It was then I realized this guy should not have a firearm. Sadly, as a teen, lessons take a while to sink in. This is the same guy who had a panic attack during a Boy Scout trip when the shell of a .22 being fired on the line next to him grazed his ear. He was ranting and screaming "you shot me! You freakin shot me!" He was also the guy who ran directly in front of my line of fire (on another trip) in a panic and screaming "ahh! they're everywhere!" (He was being swarmed by a cloud of really nastey flying ants--so think they ended up going up our noses and in our ears.) Again, lessons take a while to learn when you're a kid. But, it has helped me take gun safety very seriuosly for myself, my friends and my family.

I never take shooting as an informal or fun outing, to me its dead serious. Some friends of mine dont think the same way so I just dont go shooting with them. My wife learned this the hard way... back when we were just boyfriend and girlfriend we went shooting out in the desert. I gave her to shoot a Ruger 10/22 with a hi-capacity magazine. I went through the safety drill and showed her how to hold the gun, how to aim, and how to load ammo and remove the magazine. She was shooting at targets and and I was behind her at the truck loading magazines. She turned around and said in an excited way, "ok, I am out of ammo" ... and I said "already", she told me that yea "I shot all the bullets" and then to my amazement, she started to aim and wave the gun pointing at me! I jumped behind the truck and she started laughing "come on, its unloaded! stop freaking out" ... I then chastised her telling her that you NEVER aim a gun at someone, its not something to joke about. She said "but the gun is empty!" and I took the rifle from her and aimed it at the targets and fired off 6 more rounds. I looked at her face and you could see all the color drain away... she just sat in the truck the rest of the time remorseful and scared that she almost shot me accidentally.

She hasnt been shooting since that day... I am going to take her again real soon. If I dont post anymore here you know what happened.
