Limb Saver

Ok so I had surgery on my right shoulder a little over a year ago. I took my 30-06 out about a week ago to sight in the scope, i fired off about three rounds and had enough. the butt sits right where my scar is i tried adjusting as much as i could didnt help. any way i was looking at the limbsaver slip on recoil pads. just wondering if any members have used them or recomend others. tia

Just a thought, but maybe it's time to learn to shoot left handed?

I put a Pachmayr Decelerator on my old sporterized 03 Springer 30-06 and it really brought the nastiness out of this rifle's recoil. You might try this as well. It took the sharpness out of it.

Any chance of going to a lighter caliber? I have a Rem M700 in 270 and it is a MUCH lighter kicker than the 30-06. So much so that I still have the hard plastic Remington buttplate on the 270 and don't plan on replacing it. I am not a big guy either 5ft 9in, 165 pounds. The M-700 270 does not bother me at all.

I am not a fan of heavy recoiling calibers, either. Thats why I like the 6.5x55, 270 Winny and the 7x57 Mauser calibers so much. Lots of power with not much recoil.

My Uncle had serious shoulder surgery a few years back and had to give up his beloved Sako 30-06 as well. He is a serious shooter and was saddened by having to sell off other rifles like his 300 mag and 45-70s. He went to a Ruger No1 in 7x57mm Mauser and it does not irritate his shoulder one bit. I have shot this rifle and yes, its very pleasant and a very overlooked caliber for US deer hunters. He has taken some nice deer with the 7x57mm Mauser round. Worth a look.

they have worked ok for me, but if it's a weapon you intend to keep, why not have a compensator installed instead. Ichy_Trigger has a killer comp on his AR and tells me that the company makes them for other calibers as well.

I would never be able to change to lefty. I've been righthanded all my life and I would never get used to going southpaw. I think it would be better to switch to one of the "mild" calibers that can still do the job well. Believe it or not, the 7.62x39 in a bolt action carbine kicks pretty good

Wimpy. :P

I'm actually ambidexterous, but right eye dominant; I shoot almost as good left handed as I do right handed.

The sucky thing about ambidexterity that no one ever tells you is that "ambidexterous" basically translates into "I can't tell my left from my right." I'm constantly driving and someone will tell me to turn right and I'll perfectly execute a left turn, and then defend myself for several seconds while I try to explain that I did turn right.

In any case, in addition to switching to a lighter caliber, maybe you could reload some of your own, less powerful cartridges?

I own a PAST recoil shield, and it's helpful. The nice thing about it is you don't have to buy a recoil pad for each gun you want to shoot.

Thanks for replies and suggestions. Shooting lefty that sounds to dangerous for me.
I couldnt part with the rifle. its nothing special, mossberg 810a. it was a gift from my father. probably sounds dumb but i get sentimental.
I might eventually get a smaller caliber in the future. But ive already decided my next gun purches will be a revolver.
i'll see if a new pad helps first.

At least i have my xd for painless shooting pleasure.

oh and the turn left told right thing i do it to sometimes.
